Need to vent - lack of weight loss

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow is my one month surgiversary. I lost approximately ten pounds in the first week and a half post surgery. Since that time, I have not lost any additional weight. In fact, I have gained a pound and a half in the last week, making my one-month total between 7 and 8 pounds.

I have progressed past the point of EVERYTHING making me nauseous, but I am not losing weight at all.

For example purposes, on Friday I had four spoons of the instant oatmeal, made with Water and unsweetened for Breakfast.

For lunch I had about five spoons of Soup.

For dinner I had two small rings of calamari, two shrimp, and two scallops, none of which were deep-fried.

The only thing I drank the entire day was water.

This experience started out rough with a lot of dizziness, etc, but I was happy I had little to no surgery pain. I was positive with that first 8 pounds or so, and for the past 2.5 weeks, nothing. Then when I weighed myself this morning and saw a weight GAIN I couldn't believe it.

I am sooooooooooooooooooooooo in regret land right, and am having a pity party, table for one.

Just need to vent. Thank god for this board.

Oh, sweetie, hang in there!! We've ALL been there, one way or another. Your body is freaking out because of the new reality it finds itself in. You know for a fact that nothing you're doing is causing weight gain--your body is probably retaining fluids, and those will flush out eventually, too. Just keep doing what you can do and stay hydrated.

I know when you're eating so little, you feel like the weight should just be dropping off visibly--and there will probably be weeks when it does! Just keep doing what you're doing. Sounds like your 3-week stall just happened a little bit later than some.

I think you need to keep track of your intake. It seems to me you are not taking in enough nutrition, etc. Your body may be trying to hold on to everything because it thinks it is starving. Keep track just to see where you are. What did your doc tell you to maintain nutritionally? Kathe

I knot is hard when you don't see the weight loss you expect post-opt, but you are down 31 lbs total - forever!! That is fantastic!

I honestly think that if your surgeeon has you on a pre-op diet, it affects your post op loss in the beginning. It seems that our bodies will lose for a while, then needs an "adjustment period" before it starts losing again. It looks like you have hit your first stall and need to keep on doing what you're doing until the weight loss starts again!

Keep your chin up -- you have lots of weight loss in your future!

Hang on, don't get discouraged! Stalls, plateaus, etc happen. Sometimes sooner than later. I have just spent on whole month losing and gaining the same three pounds over and over, and FINALLY last Thursday the needle on the scale started to move south again. I was beginning to worry that something was terribly wrong and that I was done losing forever. But it will happen. I think I was at the same point as you are now, I wasn't eating enough to keep my body from thinking I was in starvation mode. Now I eat Protein for brakfast (cheese, a scrambled egg and slice of bacon), a Protein Drink for lunch and a small supper, that is mainly protein. Then have a protein drink around bedtime or later. I have lost four pounds in the last four days. Remember your body has to adjust. Even though you don't have a huge honking incision, you had major surgery! You are missing 85% of your stomach. It takes your body a while to adjust. Hang in there. It WILL get better!

Do you have some medical conditions, like any type of thyroid disorder of polycystic? If not, I wouldn't be too disheartened (easy to say, I know) because in the early post-op period is when the weight WILL fall off you, no doubt. Make sure you are taking in plenty of Water each day, go for a walk if you are able, and just relax into the process. If you do not start to lose weight soon, I would be going to have some blood tests to find out if there's anything else going on, and talk to your surgeon or other members of his support team for you and make sure you have written down your intake so you can proove to them that you have followed the plan. they will sort it all out.

I had my sleeve done 1 yr and 5 months ago. I did not lose all I wanted, but I have done well considering my food addiction, to lose 35kg (multiply by 2.2 to get pounds).

good luck

Your body is adjusting to eating so little. It will get better very soon. Stalls happen. Try to focus on the good when going through these phases and not on the numbers on the scale. I may only be 2 months post op, but I have been on the post op "diet" for months and losing for months. I can very much attest to the fact that even when the scale numbers are not going down, your body is. Measure your inches with a tape measure and you'll see. I bet your clothes start feeling looser and looser even if the numbers are staying the same.

And please don't just judge your success by the scales alone. I know everyone does, and it's tempting, but how your clothes are fitting, and using a measuring tape are other ways to see changes when the scales are stubborn.

Hey there friend!! Let's not get discouraged! I mean after all, your words of encouragement helped me so much to make the right choice for me! I agree with our fellow sleevers that say your body is just trying to adjust. Make sure that you are eating your required amount of Protein, calories and take your Vitamins as well. Don't worry..be happy...because one thing is for sure....you will NEVER be where you were before, so keep hope alive & we'll get there...together!! Hugs!!

Hello...I can relate to you, my one month was On Oct. 8th and Total I have lost 30lbs, I started out at 243 before surgery I was 238 and I am currently 213 and I am at a stall. I am starting to get discouraged also but I know it takes time. I know also that I do not get in alot of calories and I feel a little sick at times from not enough nurtrition. It is so hard to get in good healthy foods I need and my Vitamins. We have a long journey and struggle ahead but keep ur head up and things will get better.

Thanks for everyone's words. Two more days have passed and still at the same weight. I guess at least I didn't gain over the weekend. Trying to hold on to the positive. I hoped for 15 pounds or so in the first month, so I guess I will accept 8.

I follow up with my doctor this month, if things haven't moved by then, hopefully he will have an idea of what's going on. Perhaps it is just shock to the system.

The worst part is I feel myself regressing mentally and saying, well EFF it. If I am not going to lose weight, I might as well not follow the diet right? I don't want to get to that point, but I feel it coming on.

I hope to see a difference of a pound or two by next week. :/

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
