Mexico and going alone?

Recommended Posts

My sister was going with me but is now backing out. Her husband and kids are scared for her to go and she is scared too. I told her she didn't need to go if she is scared. I am not scared and feel I will be fine. Am I the crazy one?? lol My husband says he will go but hate to waste extra money when I am not scared to go alone. Just curious how many went alone or will be going alone?

Thanks

I didn't go alone but I think I would have been fine. I was willing to, but my sister insisted on going with me. But I also have a coordinator who is right there in MX who visited me and took care of anything I needed. She also came to the hotel and would have taken me shopping but I felt good so went home a day early. I see a lot of people on the forums going alone.

I am going alone and am sort of looking forward to it. I feel like I need to embark on this by myself. Then I will return home and let everyone take care of me. :D

I'm going alone and I might be as crazy as you blink.gif but I'm perfectly ok with it! My mom offered to go with me (I'm 45) but I'd be more worried about her wandering around Mexico cause she's crazier than both of us! biggrin.gif

Honestly and no joking, I plan on using this time for myself, having the surgery and doing some emotional healing through this process. I feel safe from all of the stories I've heard from the wisdom of those who have gone before us. When is your date? I'll keep in touch.

I went alone and I was fine. I spent most of the time sleeping. If I had brought someone, they would have been bored senseless. I had a book to read and never opened it, there was TV but I never watched. Just slept, sipped my liquids, walked the halls, and peed a lot.

I went alone too. My husband had a boy scout trip, and my friends couldn't afford to go...so I went alone. Not bad at all!!! I met up with another gal going to Dr. Aceves, and we had dinner the night before surgery! I think if someone else would have gone, they would have been terribly bored, and not worth the extra money to be bored!! I was bored too, but I did watch a lot of TV, played on my computer, and just wiled away the hours until I went home! It was kind of nice to have a few days to myself!! Good luck and God Bless!!

My husband came with me, and I would have been a total mess without him. He was more of a morale booster, than a keep me safe kinda thing. If he hadn't of been there I don't think I would have gotten up to walk around as early as I did, nor would I have taken the ice chips as often. That first day after surgery I just felt kinda crappy and he was there to encourage me and make me feel better. I honestly can't imagine how anyone goes thru it alone.

My date is Oct 14th! I honestly think I would rather go alone! I don't see the point of paying good money to watch me sleep! Thanks for all the encouragement!

I went alone and my only problem was I was bored out of my mind! I spent a lot of time walking around outside. I walked several blocks one way, then i would turn around and come back and walk several blocks the other way.

I didn't bring my lap top but I sure wish I had. Luckily, Dr. Campos would lend me his every day at around 3:30.

I went alone and met a guy who was having his VSG at he same time, we stuck together as buddies throughout the whole process, maybe you can find someone too. While you'll do fine alone it sure is nice to have someone to talk to and count on.

Another question when going alone is...how did you pack? I know you aren't suppose to lift much? I thought about bringing my lAp top but thought it might be too heavy for me. Thinking I better pack light.

Im going alone too. I have mixed emotions about it, kind of like everything else about this whole things lol. Luckily I met someone here is going the same time. She's already been great support for me and completely understands like no one in my family or friends could.

If anyone else is going to Dr Aceves this weekend.... I'll see u there!!! Wish me luck!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
