Surgery anesthesia nausea and affect on surgery?

Recommended Posts

I will be having the sleeve done in about a month or so. My worry is that I always throw up coming out of surgery due to the anesthesia. And since I will have a freshly cut on stomach with staples just added, how will throwing up right after surgery affect this? Has anyone had this problem coming out of surgery? If I get violently sick, I'm thinking that my stomach contracting a lot during this may damage the staples and cause them to come loose or leak or something. I see the surgeon in about a week, and I'm sure he can let me know his plan about this, but just curious as to if anyone else has had this experience and what can be done to assure noting gets messed up in the stomach from throwing up. Thanks!

Mark

I also get sick after anesthesia also, not violent throwing up but a lot of nausea. The best thing to do is tell your surgeon, the nurse, and especially the anesthesiologist. I had my surgery on Tuesday and no problems at all. They put this patch on me that really helps and they can give you other meds too. Let everyone know who you come into contact with.

Good luck!!!

I am one of those people who cant handle any medication, and the I dry heaved for 2 days all day from the medicine and staples and tummy were and is just fine, but like the last post said just notify your surgeon that you have a sensitive tummy and maybe thats the part they will be removing

Thank you for the advice! I will surely mention it to everyone at the doctors office and hospital.

I threw up almost immediately after I woke up. It was kind of foamy blood, which frightened me but it didn't hurt at all and they said it was normal. My stomach didn't contract to throw up, it just found its own way out. lol They gave me anti-nausea shots every so often in the hospital and I didn't have any trouble, but I don't think I'm overly sensitive.

I just had my surgery Monday and I vomited the foamy blood 3x. My stomach did not clench up or anything, it just came up. Before surgery, the anesthesiologist talked w me and I told him I vomit every time. He gave me a shot and a patch to wear behind my ear. I also received more shots from the nurse and a sub lingual pill....and a suppository, all for nausea. I used a morphine drip for pain. Tuesday I had to be taken to xray for the contrast thing and thought I would rather have my skin peeled off me. The ride took 2 elevators and through 3 buildings! Every bump was hell for me. Because I was so nauseous I couldn't use my cpap either. All's well here. I did not tear anything.

Did not ever throw up, but nearly lost it after the iodine contract solution for the upper GI to check for leaks. Terrible stuff. The thin barium was somewhat better.

I can never tolerate meds not even just advil without getting sick. I told the anesthesiologist and he gave me 2 shots and a patch behind my ear and I never got sick!

That's some encouraging news on those who threw up right after surgery without their stomach contracting. I hope that's the case for me too, just would hate to damage the staples/stitches by heaving too much.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
