GROWLING HUNGAR PANGS

Recommended Posts

I'm three months out. Doing well with Vitamins, shakes etc. I eat whatever I want but I can only have a few bites then I'm full. Only complaint is that majority of food does not taste very good; not enjoyable like pre-op. Also I am regularly having major hungar pangs. Very disappointing when supposedly the hungar harmone producing part of the stomach was removed. My nurse says I need to eat more Protein to help with the hungar pangs and that eventually the hungar pangs will go away and my taste buds will return to normal like at six months. I've lost 50 pounds so far. I have at least a 100 pounds to go to get to goal weight of 150. I still look fat so no one has noticed the weightloss as of yet. My clothes are getting looser and I'm about ready to go back into my smaller sizes that I used to wear. I'm just looking forward to a more noticeable size appearance in the coming months. Is anyone out past six months that had the taste bud issue and constant nagging growling hungar pangs? If so, how are you doing now? Right now I feel this is a cruel joke to make such a sacrifice only to find myself hungriar than ever and being hungry within 20-30 mins after eating. Really hoping this issue is short term.

Are you taking a PPI?

If you are feeling and hearing your tummy growl 20-30 mins after you eat, then it does actually sound more like an acid issue than hunger. I know it feels the same, but it's a well known issue that acid causes these "fake" hunger feelings and grumblings. If you aren't on a PPI I would definitely try that rather than continue to feel like you're hungry all the time. You can get the generic of these over the counter now. There a few different ones, and sometimes you have to increase dosage or switch to a different one before you find one that works. You can ask your dr about this, or just get them at Walmart or anywhere.

As far as things not tasting as good, I look at it as another advantage of the Sleeve, so I hope it lasts forever for me. I am less likely to eat the wrong things or overeat them if they don't taste the same way to me. But I believe I have read that this does change later on.

Congrats on the 50 lbs, that's a great success so far, and I am sure it will become more and more noticeable as you lose even more. You are doing fabulous so far!

:)

Thanks so much for your post. I don't know what a PPI is. I do take Nexium for acid for first 6 months post-op (I was on nexium anyway prior to surgery). I had a huge acid prob before surgery. Doc did an upper GI and said I had a huge hyatal hernia that caused my acid reflux issues. He fixed the hernia same time as he did the sleeve surgery. I don't think this is an acid related feeling as this feels exactly like pre-op when you get hungry the nagging hungar pangs and physical sotmach growling starts. If this is acid related it sure mimics exactly how you feel when you are truly hungry. If I could take anything to make this stop I would feel so much better. You are probably right about the taste buds maybe being a good thing. But it would be nice for what little we do get to eat be a bit more pleasing to the palate. Who knows....hopefully as the months go by these two issues will improve to a more manageable/liveable level. Thanks for your encouragement - it means alot. I've told no one about this surgery. The only people on the planet that knows is my mom and dad and the doctor. I felt that if others know I will surely be judged. As far as I am concerned this is a private matter and decision. I have just felt so frustrated with the constant hungar I decided to reach out to others who have had the same procedure to see if anyone else has been having this. My Dr. office said they have had only one other patient complain of the hungar and that was a male patient. They advised him to eat more Protein and that it seemed to help him. I guess I just need to up my Protein intake and hope that helps.

hang in there it gets better. I'm almost 7 months out and now have all of my taste buds plus some :) the growling has gotten less frequent also. When you get that drink some Water and if that doesn't work just take one small bite it should hold you over for a while. It was very frustrating at first but things will start to even out soon.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
