Famly Dinner and my Sleeve

Recommended Posts

This is my 4th day post op. My son lives upstairs with his wife and two kids. His wife cooked dinner and my husband ate with them. I was not tempted by the food but I was a bit jealous of not being able to taste any of it because of the 2wwek Clear Liquids. I have Unjury chicken Soup which is very tasty but just the mere fact of not having made me a bit upset. to top off the night, my grand daughter came down later and bought a cupcake she made to her grand father with a proud stride and promptly delivered it to him. I was happy to see her bright eyes as my husband told her how good it was but I was sad too because it was her first time baking. seems like time is standing still. I normally would shut down at a time like this and go to bed and sleep jus to see a new day but now I HAVE TO SIT THRU THIS BECAUSE i need to get in my clear liquid intake. Can anyone suggest WARM clear liquids that will make the next 13 days seem a touch normal for dinner other than chicken and beef broth?

First off, congrats on being sleeved and making the decision to try to become healthier! I know it can be difficult and quite the adjustment, and when there are others around and family meals, it makes it harder to avoid the emotions that come from such a change in our lifestyle.

I don't have a lot to offer in the ways of clear liquids, but I did use Alpine Diet Spiced Apple Cider as a sort of comfort type food and it tasted good to me. I got it in the section of store where you find hot chocolates and teas. You could also try some of the warm teas, a lot of people like those and some of them can help with relaxing. I think there's Chamomile and others you can check out. Good luck and remember you are not alone, we are all going thru this together!!

Put your broth in a pretty bowl and use a spoon to eat it.

Add some spices or a little lemon juice to your broth.< /p>

Take your Jello out of the that little clear cup and put it in a pretty dessert dish.

Focus on the family, not the food.

Celebrate the occasion, not the food.

Remind yourself that this is just a few weeks recovery in exchange for a healthy life.

Journal your feelings about missing food.

Remember you are not alone! There are a lot of us on this journey with you. How lucky we are to have each other and this tool that can give us a healthy, happy life!

Ugh you are in the middle of the toughest time. My doc had me on clear liquids for 2 weeks and full liquids for 2 more weeks, but let me have my Protein shakes after the first 4 days. I took campbells bean and bacon Soup and watered it down and put it in the blender and blended it until smooth, heated it and had it with a little cheese. I would call the doc to see if that would be okay. It was the most delicious thing I ever ate LOL I didn't have it until about 10 days after surgery, but then I lived on it.

Good luck and know this...you lose a huge amount of weight during the liquid stage so try to focus on that and know that it will pass really quickly.

Hang in there and congratulations on your decision to get sleeved!

I had my husband order take out taco soup.....I ate the broth from it with some melted cheese in it. I also had him get all 3 Soups our local chinese resturant made. I only liked one of them.....but it was nice to have a different flavor. Get the soups and just strain them if needed. Buy progesso soups and strain them if you need too. Good luck, I remember those days. Even though its not easy, its so worth it in the end. :-)

I have to be honest, I didn't eat with my family for about 4 weeks after surgery. The smells would make me ill or they would give me terrible cravings and I would feel sorry for myself because I couldn't partake.

I would either watch TV or go in my bedroom and read a book. This is temporary. You will be able to join them soon enough without feeling so awkward. If you can't take it emotionally, there is nothing wrong with admitting it. I couldn't take it and I had to remove myself from the situation. Not forever, just for a few weeks until I was healed enough to handle it.

No shame in that!!!

I absolutely hated canned Soup. It gave me a weird taste in my mouth. Try ordering Soups from restaurants and just straining them. That way you get the yummy flavors of all the veggies and meat. My favorites were wonton, egg drop, french onion, avgolemeno, and albondigas.

You've had great advice. Soup was my goto food in the early days. This is the toughest time. I feel so bad for those folks sleeved around Thanksgiving or Christmas! This too shall pass and it'll be a distant memory soon. Hang in there!

I brought home hot and sour Soup from my favorite chinese restarant - and blended it until pureed. It was great!

Soup is still my favorite meal--quick and easy and very friendly to my sleeve. :-) Now I get to make my own, so we keep a few containers in the fridge for fast heating. One quart of soup seems to last forever these days!! LOL

I know it's rough right after surgery. For me, it was watching television--suddenly, there were hundreds of commercials with food that I couldn't have, and I was really feeling sorry for myself!! Your body right now thinks it's starving (because in a way, it is), and your brain is going to heighten your senses in order to help food look and smell more appetizing to you so that you will want to eat. That's normal. Frustrating for us post-sleeve, but normal. It will also go away eventually. My sense of smell became so incredibly keen after surgery--when I went to my car in the morning to go to work, I could smell the neighbor's coffee brewing, and we live in south Louisiana with a/c practically all year (no windows open!). At this point, my sense of smell is still even more keen than before surgery, but either it has calmed down or I have learned to live with it, because it no longer bothers me. I still notice smells of food, but they don't matter and they don't trigger any feelings of deprivation.

You will soon be able to eat more normally. Right now, the situation just stinks. Don't worry about missing out on family stuff--because you've had this surgery, you've increased the chances that you'll be around to see that cute granddaughter graduate, get married, have kids, etc..... It's a trade-off, sure, but you decided ahead of time that it was worth it. It does stink now. It will get better so very quickly!! Hang in there-we're all here, and we've all been there.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
