Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

I am 7 years out and there is no way my stomach is the size it was and I am back to square one.

I would love to eat 2 pieces of pizza. I used to be able to eat 4 pieces before surgery. We had pizza the other night and I was so stuffed after one piece, I was uncomfortable. I wanted another piece, but my surgery held me back.

So the surgery does help with a lot of my eating problems. It just doesn't help with willpower.

The thing that makes me gain weight and have trouble losing it are the sliders. Cookies, candy, and especially, anything sweet actually.

I could eat a cow, i think. I do not feel any restriction. At least not like i cab recall. I could eat a pound box of Pasta but i dont do that anymore. So i dont know if im eating the equivalent of how i ate b4 surgery. I could eat a whole pound bag of chips and a 1/2 gal ice cream. Before. I feel like i am eating a lot now. Not the same things. Carrots. Peppers cuckes, ice pops nut butter celery ....but i eat so much of bit and so constantly. Thats the old me with a new menu.

Finally fit-hope it helps. Anything is worth a try.

I know I have an abnormal relationship with food and hunger makes me hyper-anxious/overeat. Just have to keep on fighting the obesity monster.

Best wishes to you and your friend.

Just for interest-I am a professional Hypnotherapist and find with therapy it's possible to get amazing results.

For instance I have a shark phobia and can now swim in the ocean with Hypno, used to be a compulsive clothes buyer and no longer have this problem with Hypno. Have stopped dozens of people from smoking cigarettes and rid them of life limiting phobias against needles, vomit, spiders, birds etc. But have had little or no success with weight. This includes doing the virtual gastric band.

Yes! There are people who will do well with paying hundreds of dollars for Hypno but maybe these same people would become Weight Watcher of the year they are so determined.

I have seen many clients and tried to help with weight. I can stop addictions like to chocolate, cake and Cookies and if the weight s related to one issue like this it works. However I have given myself many sessions to control appetite and anxiety eating without success so if you are trying Hypno and it's costing a lot of cash which it will do my advice is try another route.

I tired Hypno and it was ridiculous. It just seemed like a person talking while I laid there and wasted time. I couldn't relax the way I was supposed to according to the hypnotherapist.

She even made me tapes to listen to while I fell asleep . All they it was annoy me.

So what are your weight fluctuations if you do have any? How much do the slidders contribute to it?

I would say I go up and down 7 lbs and that sweets are 100% the reason I can't stay at goal.

Oregon Daisy I could put you off sweets for good by hypnotherapy.

This would solve your weight fluctuation. Go see a qualified hypnotherapist who has a good reputation. This will really help you.

I have put people off sweets and chocolate for good.

I thought I would jump in here and post about my struggle. :)

I have struggled since the first of the year. I found this instant double mocha Cappuccino that I just LOVED and was drinking 2 cups everyday through the week and 3 on the weekends because I loved it so much. I also have not been able to reduce it until the first of this month. Mentally, I was addicted to it! It was just too good. Even tho I knew it was keeping me from losing.

Granted I lost about 4 lbs both January and February but in March I had a piece of cake or muffin 1 or 2 times a week and my weight fluctuated 4lbs up and down during March and April. I have learned that I HAVE to keep my carbs down below 50. More like 40 or lower. My calories have gone up on average to 1100-1200 through the week and 100-200more on weekends.

I finally lost 2 new lbs the first week of May and this week I have lost another 1.5lbs. I finally hit 100lbs lost but I have only lost 60 since my surgery 06/24/15. So I consider myself a slow loser. I don't exercise regularly but walk some. I am 57 yrs old. I have chosen not to exercise like a mad woman because I did not want my body to become dependent on it because I knew I would not keep it going. (I hate exercise) :)

I guess all this to say that it only took 10g too many carbs to throw me off. Sometimes its the small things. I have also wondered if it took those to months for my body to adjust to the higher calories but I don't know....

I have always wondered and worried if I would be in the category that would regain or not lose all the weight.

Anyway...I wish all of you that are struggling good luck in finding what works for you.

Also, I have a friend that had the sleeve done and the amount of food she can eat has always been less than what I can eat and she has lost all of the weight she needed to lose. Sometimes I wish I could have a redo to a smaller sleeve! lol But I would still need to work on my head! :(

I think the real magic here is *knowing* what we're doing and *knowing* what we've changed -- so we can see what things cause us to lose / gain / maintain.

Sounds to me like you're making that magic happen for yourself. :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
