Hi my name is Kelly and I was sleeved on July 20th, just about 2 and half weeks ago...WOOHOO!! I've lost 19 pounds since the actual surgery date. I had lost 15 before that during six months of dietary. This was a feat in itself as it's very difficult for me to lose weight. I ate about 1100 calories and day and exercised frequently. I began with a BMI of 40 (242 lbs.)...haven't measured it again since. Current weight is 214

I have to say, through all the blogs I've read and research I had done before the surgery, nothing prepared me for the excruciating gas pains throughout my shoulders, back and chest. I woke up crying and clutching my left shoulder thinking they had operated on the wrong area!! I was up and walking (sprinting as the nurses put it) not long after I got back to my room because I was told that was the only thing that would help the pain. It actually took about a week plus to completely go away. Other than the dry mouth that was the worst part, my five small incisions were nothing compared to the gas pains. (bonus, my Doc repaired a hiatal hernia when he was in there...thanks Dr. Ku!)

The next phase was liquids, I was actually pretty hungry and experienced severe headaches until I could have blended and strained Soups. The toughest part of this week was trying to keep my family eating normally but feeling so jealous at the smells coming from their plates. Some tears were shed at these times because dinner time is a special part of our family's day. With my wonderful husband's support, we got through it! Thanks babe!

I was afraid the pureed stage would be as hard the blended (I was really hating my blender at this point) but it was actually the start of feeling normal again. I did throw my food in and hit puree a few times but I came to realize that chopping it and chewing well was the exactly the same thing. My first meal was plain tuna from a can with a little bit of light mayo and it may as well have been surf and turf it tasted so good.

So for the next two weeks I'm eating just about everything except for chunks of steak and hard fruits like apples and skins of other fruits. I'm so happy to be eating veggies and fruits again, I missed them terribly for the past two weeks. (chewing very well and taking small bites, not drinking during or after for an hour) The bucket list of foods I was eating before suregery should have been salads and fruits...I knew I would miss them but not as much as I actually did.

Well that's my story, probably very similar to most. I will admit, I'm already nervous as the loss slows down that this is just ONE MORE THING that isn't going to work for me. I really hope I'm wrong, as I'm following everything to the letter. That being said, I need a little help and advice from you veterans out there. I'm having a hard time drinking 64 oz of Water (I know other liquids count but in my own head it SHOULD be water) also, the strawberry powder is making me want to toss my Cookies I'm so sick of it. I've tried putting the flavorless powder in my foods but it just clumps up and makes me gag. I really need help getting my Protein in....any good recipe ideas to help with this??

Thanks so much for reading,

Kelly

I was sleeved 8/8. I am 6days postop and on Clear Liquids. I still have some gas pain but it is manageable now. I have to stay on Clear Liquids for three weeks! I get to add in my muscle milk Protein shakes tomorrow though and I am beyond thrilled! I feel your pain with the family going about their business eating everything. I have not cried yet about it but I have felt sad that I couldnt eat. I was on liquids a week before my surgery too. It feels like I havent eaten in a year. I have head hunger I think. I just like the smel and want to eat it. Not necessarily that my tummy wants it. Anyway, I am proud for you and keep up the good work! I want to hear all about how its going. I get to go to soft food week 4 and 5.

HI! Thanks for sharing your story! I cannot imagine two more weeks of just clear liquids! I wonder what the different schools of thought are from Doctor to doctor. Imagine how much you'll lose the first month! Every new morsel that you eat will taste like the best thing in the universe...I was trying on my size sixteens tonight and weeeeeee! they fit, so I've lost a size in less than a month. With my metabolism that would have taken me six months, so I'm quite happy even though I feel like it's moving more slowly for me. I also feel pretty nauseous every time I eat, I see the doc and nutritionist Monday so I'll have to ask.

Take good care of yourself, maybe try powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury brand Protein porducts, they have a chicken Soup flavor. Keep up the good work and congrats!

Kelly, I swear, I was reading your post and I swear you were writing my story. I also was Sleeved July 20th and I also have this chest pain and shoulder pain. It actually sort of went away for a bit but now it's back and it's driving me crazy. I also don't feel like i'm getting enough fluids in and just the thought of more pureed foods is gagging me.

Tomorrow I start back to work. sad.gif I've been off work for the summer and I'm dreading to go back to work and having to bring my food (soup) to work etc. I think I won't be able to eat eat til at least the end of the month.

What about you?

I'm so glad you posted exactly what I've been feeling. I too was crying a bit the other day to my husband because I just want to pull my hair out.

Thanks again for sharing your story!

Oh Polly!! I feel so bad! The gas pain WILL go away, mine has gotten very mild thank goodness, it was horrific but hang in there! Are you on pureed foods still per your doctor or because your stomach can't handle it? I've been very lucky and eating almost everything (soft and well chewed) except for harder fruits and lettuces. (I DO feel awful every time after I eat though, sick and break out into a cold sweat!) my first real meal during puree was tuna with a little FF mayo and it was sooooooo good. Maybe if you just chopped your meats very fine and chewed them well you could feel a little more normal. I found that puree on my blender did the exact same thing that my knife could do. Also, I changed up my Protein drink cause I was sooooo sick of strawberry. unjury makes an awesome chocolate. I blend my cup of skim with a scoop of chocolate, 2 scoops unflavored powder, one banana, one tablespoon Peanut Butter and some ice and that is AWESOME!! It tastes like a treat, has 58 grams of Protein and I'm not hungry til about 2:00. You can also add a tablespoon of instant coffee to the chocolate and it tastes like a coffee drink. Greek yogurt helps me get the rest of my protein.

I'm sorry I don't have more to tell you, please keep me updated...how much have you lost??

According to my scale (standing on it naked) I've lost close to 25 lbs. How about you? Yes, according to my dr. I'm supposed to be eating only puree - no lumps, bumps seeds etc. (like thin pancake batter) from day 18 til day 28. :( Basically til the end of this month.

I have tried a little of this and a little of that though. Not too much.

I've been buying and drinking the Atkins Advantage Protein drinks and I like the Mocha Latte shakes. Wow...the 58 grams of Protein sounds like a lot. A few times before I think I either drank too many Proteins at once and I got really really sick where I felt like I was going to pass out. My 8 yr. old daughter put a cold rag on my head and I felt like I was out for the count. I've learned to drink it much slower now.

Just reading your comments was like I had written it myself. I called my husband and I read it to him because it was pretty much exactly how I felt. I was even in tears the other day too just because I dreaded meal time because even though I was hungry, nothing sounded good etc.

Well, it's good to know I'm not alone and as everyone says, "It gets better."

Have a great day!

Polly

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
