1 week and 2 days post op I need in couragement

Recommended Posts

I have managed in a week and 2 days to lose 16 lbs. but my weight has not changed in two days. I know this sounds like I am being a "baby" , but i am worried what I am doing wrong. I am slowly adding mushy solids trying to maintain my Protein. I do weight every day I am sure that is not a good idea. Anybody further out from me have any words of wisdom??

Congrats on the 16 lbs!!! You are doing great. Your body is just confused and possibly rebelling. It's holding onto Fluid too. Stalls are a normal part of the process for most of us, just try to focus on staying hydrated and keeping Protein up and you will do well. We all get insecure when this happens and think we are the only one the sleeve isn't gonna work on, I know. I had a stall that began in my 2nd wk and lasted over a month, so I know it is terrible. I had lost a good chunk before surgery so my stall started early and lasted a long time. But I did lose inches and clothes sizes during this time. 2 sizes in tops and 2 sizes in jeans. Don't worry bout that scale so much, and don''t stress when it's stubborn cuz your body is changing regardless.

Instead of focusing on what has not happened, take not of what has!!! When have you ever lost 16 pounds in 2 weeks? This is a journey, not a marathon. Look at my ticker, I and many others are proof the sleeve will work for you!

Your body is in shock and desperatly trying to hold on to what is "normal" for it. You will loose inches when you are not losing on the scale and you will loose on the scale when you are not loosing inches!

Your body will lose weight in steps, not a gradual level loss. Mine does anyway. I'll go 4 days without losing a pound and then 2 will fall off. Pretty weird but that's the way it goes. Don't worry about it. Your fat can not sustain the level of calories you're taking in. It has to give in and come off eventually. Hang in there. From a guy's point of view.

Rule number 1, throw your scale out the window, call your PCP and ask them if you can come in on morning every other week and weigh in with them.

oh yea, and buy a good tape measure...that is a better judgment of loss than the scale

I have been stuck at 295 for 5 days now. I am 2 weeks post op and dumped 20 pounds in the first 9 days, then nothing. I think for me its having faith in the process and trusting that what has been done by my surgeon will work as has been stated in the many posts on this forum. Of course it is frustrating, but I am only 2 weeks post-op as of today, and sometimes I forget that. I am having to learn to eat all over again. New habits, routines, rituals etc ad nauseum.

Stay strong, and never quit!

The day I started "mushies" at two weeks after surgery, I stopped losing weight. The stall lasted for 9 days, which is comparatively short. I am like Greg in that I will stay the same weight down to the ounce for 3 or 4 days and then lose a pound a day for three days. Like others have said, its like stairsteps. I do weigh daily and always have, even when I was gaining weight! However, you can't let the scale determine your behavior. Stick to the plan and the weight will come off. I have a friend who says she "rewards" herself with a treat when the scale is down. The problem is she also eats to comfort herself when the scale is not to her liking. A dangerous pattern.

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.....

Please don't be discouraged! You're doing wonderfully! One thing I've found is that my body may need to "reset" every now and then. During this time I may not lose pounds, then I'll wake up and have lost 5 or have changed a dress size. It's a little odd how it works, but the results are fantastic!

You simply CAN'T focus on day-by-day weight loss, as there are too many things that happen on a daily basis -- eating/drinking, elimination, Water weight gain/loss, hormonal changes, exercise-related changes, sleep-related changes -- for a daily weigh-in to be useful at all.

Frankly, even a weekly weigh-in is almost too much, but it is the most frequent you should weigh yourself. Day-to-day changes in weight are nothing to really pay attention to.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
