One week out observations

Recommended Posts

Hey ya'll. Hope everyone is doing well. I just wanted to share some observations/ experiences from my first week post-op. I came home last Saturday and was determined to meet all the requests of my Dr., bad idea. I tried to get in all my Protein and liquids - thats 48 oz of liquids which include the liquid I use to make my Protein shakes and 90 to 100 grams of Protein. That's four or five, count em' 1,2,3,4 or 5 Protein Shakes. I made myself sick on day 2 and ended up throwing up almost a whole protein shake!! Do you have any idea how mad I was!!! It was enough to make a preacher cuss! SO lesson one- it is better to get in 75 grams of your protein without vomiting than to force that last cup of protein down and end up losing it all! I have been able to work up to this as the week has progressed but it has been a chore.

On day three, my husband and I went to visit my mother-in-law ( who is just precious to me) for her birthday. Of course we stayed later than we planned and it was dinner time. My sister-in-law came over and cooked dinner for everyone. She made spaghetti, salad, and garlic bread. For some strange reason it smelled awful to me. I know it wasn't awful, but it almost made me sick to smell it cooking!! Once it was made and everyone was sitting around with their plates, I thought that looks soooo goood!! I wasn't hungry, but I didn't quite know what to do with myself while everyone around me ate. It was a real challenge!!!! Lesson number two: plan for those times when everyone around you will be eating and drinking and having a good old time while you choke down protein. It will happen.

Today i went with my mother aka "Paula Deen" and my youngest son to the aquarium. I was having a hard time getting my protein down this morning so I drank a premixed muscle milk for the first time for convenience sake and got it down pretty easy. Well, fast forward one building of the aquarium and the nature trail walk that leads to the next building and I find myself needing to get to a bath room (if you know what I mean) NOW!! I take care of business and think I'm on my way when we round the next corner on our way to the shark tank when BAM!!!!! it hits me again. I sprinted out and back to the little girls room for round two!! I don't know what caused this but......lesson number three: don't try a new Protein Drink when your going out for the day- it can be BAD...REAL BAD!

We left the aquarium and of course the normal people with me need to eat. My mother loves "Bakers Crust" so off we go for a late lunch. Now you must know this about my mother, she LOVES food... probably more than me. She sits there and starts to read the details of the menu to me... OMG torture me!!! I finally look up and say "mother, would you mind reading that to your self maybe this time?" She says she's sorry that she forgot that I can't eat yet. REALLY MOM.. you forgot that a week ago today I finally went to a Dr. and had him cut out most of my stomach so I couldn't continue to kill my self with a fork!!! Of course I said "it's ok mother". lesson number four... If you have a mother, friend, cousin, etc. that loves food, It may be wise to limit your time with them while in the liquid phase of your diet!!!

Thanks for sharing this! I am definitely already trying to mentally gear myself up for those food situations - we have lots of work meetings with food, and it will definitely be hard.

Hi, I am a week out too, but I don't have to deal with much family. I think that it is easier if we can spent some 'self' time to get used to what we have to do now. I admire your courage for taking on so much.

OMG we had the same week! I came home Tuesday and dinner smelled like death. Last night I was so tempted to try a pinch of chicken or potatoes. My 4 yr old notices mommy isn't eating what everyone else is eating so he feels the need to try everything I eat, I'm like baby mommy gets 3 oz and your trying 1 of those oz your killing me!

Then today I drove my parents around shopping and they decide to get my baby a treat for being a big boy.....this was fries and shakes at mc donalds.......grrrrrrrr is all i could think smelling the fries as i sipped on my crystal light. glad to see I am not the only one with these feelings!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
