Woke up choking on acid!!

Recommended Posts

Last night I went to sleep and about 2 hours later, I woke up choking on acid and a burning throat!!!

I have had reflux for 8 years and have NEVER had that happen. I got up and took a chug of Gaviscon and another Nexium and it stopped burning and I was able to go back to sleep. That was scary!!

FOr the past 3 nights for dinner, I have had taco filling, I wonder if that is the reason for my suffering????

Anyone else have this? It was weird for me.

Kelly :(

Are you eating closer to bed time???

It could be the taco filling. I've had some breakthrough reflux in the pregnancy, and it's been the most random foods like a fricken blueberry poptart, but if it's within an hour of me going to bed or lying down, I know I'm gonna have some acid.

I hate the ads too ! ! !

I don't know why that would happen with the sleeve. I had that happen all the time with the band.

Maybe you should ask your doctor if you should be on a different PPI? If it keeps happening, definitely talk to your doctor.

I am not sleeved yet, but I currently have acid reflux (with severe chest pains), nothing seemed to work, until I started taking my Nexium right before I go to bed (after dinner), and I have not had any more issues since.

I ate dinner at 6 and went to bed at 8:30.

That is how I usually eat. I take my PPI in the a.m. I am just going to stay clear of the spicy for a while and see if that helps.

Thanks all!!

Kelly :D

Happened to me all the time around month 6. Do not eat 2 hours before bed. Lay low on fluids an hour before bed. Take your PPI the same time everyday and have tums on hand. I'm 10 months out and it's pretty much stopped.

Hi Kelly! Sorry to hear about the acid! I don't generally get heartburn, before or after surgery. However, if I get it, it will be because of spicyish foods. Also, I need several hours before I lie down, preferably doing some minor movement - i.e., around the house. Otherwise I will get that sudden acid you described that wakes you up. I hope you ommiting the taco filling works out. From the few times I've that aweful acid I know how nasty it can be. Take care!

P.S. - HATE, hate, hate those damn ads. The site would not let me post for a few days and I think it may have been caused by this change!

I never had acid problems before my surgery, but have been plagued by it since (7 weeks post-op). At first, I didn't even know what was wrong!

My doc initially gives everyone a standard prescription for Pepcid. The Pepcid did not do the trick for me, so he prescribed Protonix, which has helped a lot. The doc said I may also need to continue to take the Pepcid on occasion. These two meds work differently, and are safe to take together (according to the doc!).

I haven't been sleeved yet, but this happens to me all the time now :( I wake up choking and have aspirated the bile/acid into my windpipe and it hurts and burns SOOOOO bad. I have been on 40 mg delayed release Omeprazole for years but God forbid if I forget to take it one day.....I am worried about what will happen AFTER I am sleeved since it seems so many have worse issues after the VSG. Scares me because constant aspiration of stomach acid like that can lead to esophageal cancer. Probably have a hiatal hernia that my surgeon will fix while he's in there rearranging....

As to the taco meat, yes, it happens worse with me with spiciness, or tomato-based foods (spaghetti, lasagna, pizza) taco meat is a classic, enchiladas, and if I just plain overeat....it comes back up, even if I wait two to three hours.

Hope it stops, Kelly.....it's definitely no fun! And it's not right that you can't just eat taco meat....maybe ask the doc for a stronger PPI or Protonix??

Well, like I said, I never have had that happen before and I have had GERD sine 2004. I use to always take Nexium, but after surgery I switched to Prilosec because I found that it helped with the hunger issues I was having. I was starving all of the time and now when I take Prilosec, I am not!

I don't ever get heartburn or anything and I feel fine, but that one incident has me thinking that maybe it was just the 3 nights of eating taco meat with mild salsa??? Too much for my 3 month of sleeve maybe?? I think if it happens again, I will either ask my dr. for Protonix or go back to the Nexium.

For those that take Protonix, does it help with the hunger/stomach growling thing?? That is HUGE for me and I really do not feel so hungry on the Prilosec.

Thanks so much!

Kelly ;)

I take Protonix, and rarely feel hungry. However, I can't say that it is BECAUSE of the medicine. I have not had any stomach growling since the surgery. I think I finally understand the phrase, "eat to live, rather than live to eat!"

I too have woke up choking on acid and aspirated once or twice from it. It was AWFUL! And I had fallen asleep sitting up in the chair! When I was 265lbs i had a lot of reflux, but when I was thinner(before gaining that much weight, I didn't have any issues at all).

Now that I've lost 84lbs, I STILL have the reflux. Must be due to smaller stomach? Not sure but Prilosec has helped SO MUCH! Hoping someday it will go away completely but who knows?

Anyway, good luck!

PS. the ads are soooooooo irritating!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
