hard to get in all my liquids

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys!

I was sleeved on Monday 7/18 in TX and flew home to PA yesterday (Thursday). I'm feeling pretty good. Sore & tired, but otherwise good. If I didn't have a 1 yr old & 3 yr old to take care of, it would be much easier. My biggest challenge right now is getting in all my liquids. My surgeon said the goal is 64 oz of Water and 2 Protein drinks (80g Protein total). That's the minimum actually, and I haven't met the goal once so far. :)

Tuesday: (after passing my "leak test") I managed 20 oz of Water throughout the day.

Wednesday: 8 oz of a Protein Drink plus 12 oz of water. 1 oz of French Onion Soup from Panera (just broth).

Thursday: 16 oz bottle of water, 8 oz Protein Drink x 2 for a total of 65g protein.

Today I mixed 14 oz of FF Lactaid with a packet of Syntrax nectar and a serving of vanilla Protein powder. That's a total of 65g of protein in one giant drink. Your body can't really absorb more than 40g of protein at a time so I divided it in half. I drank the first half this morning (it took well over an hour to get it all down) and put the other half away for later.

I think I'll be able to get in all my protein today but getting in all the water will be difficult. I can only take baby sips all day long.....

Hey valentine,

I've been sleeved a few weeks so I know exactly what you're dealing with. I took me at least a week to get to the point that I was getting all the required stuff in. What I've learned from this board and talking with my doc is that the 60-80 oz of fluids a day is primary for the first 10-14 days. Protein count is 2nd. Stay hydrated and you'll feel better each day. Good luck! :D

Hydration is definitely key! My plan actually didn't allow Protein Shakes until day 7. For the first week I just focused on getting as close to the 64oz mark of Water as I could. Some days are better than others. I'm now 11 days post op and am still focusing on h20, but am managing to get 1-2 Protein shakes in a day. I've also really listened to my body...if I so much hear a rumble or a gurgle I back off, those are signals to slow down..so I do! It sounds like you are doing great...keep up the good work, listen to your body and now that everday gets better :)

Gatoraid2 or Poweraid Zero will also help with your energy. My nut told me just yesterday that it was the best thing to make you feel better after being sleeved and she also told me to make beef stew to blend for the second week. That sounds so much better to me than a lot of other things. I hope this helps. Good luck to you! Sip sip sip!!!! :) ((hugs))

Hydration is definitely more important. Try different temperatures of liquids. I found that plain ice cold Water went down best at first - while others report that room temperature goes down best. I'm one of the lucky ones, 5 days after surgery I was able to get in all of my water and Protein requirements. But I know that is more unusual.

I am really struggling to get everything in too. I think yesterday, I had 2 sf Jello cups, which took about 40 minutes to finish. I had about 10 oz. of diet Decaf tea, 15 oz. of Water and about 4 oz. of nsa carnation instant Breakfast (I loved them before, but yesterday it tasted gross.) I have something with me constantly, but I just can't seem to get it down fast enough.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
