Hi All!

I'm looking for sleevers in the DMV area. I hope to be sleeved in August and it's really hard to find good support groups in this area. Feel free to post here or send me a message!

I am in VA and will be sleeved July 28th. Once it is done, I will let you know how it went. Post op diets and restrictions vary greatly with the surgeon. Keep in touch and let me know how it goes for you.

I am in Baltimore and am 19 days post op from Dr. Aceves. I would love to find a local support group. If you have any questions...let me know. I am down 18 lbs post op and can tell you that it's not all roses and sunshine to this point but everything has a price and as the saying goes "no pain, no gain" or lose as is the case. I wouldn't change a thing but there are definite good and bad days. My best advice would be to give yourself time to heal. This is MAJOR surgery and your body and mind need time to recouperate!! I have an office job and am off for another week. You will have sudden bouts of fatigue and there will be tummy issues in the beginning and you will need to rest!! Remember to take care of yourself abd follow the post op diet to protect your new tummies!! Good luck and God bless!

I'm in the DVM, just starting the process for the pre-approval diet-I should be getting sleeved at Univ of Md in Bmore but I will be attending groups in the DC area (im sure you know that traffic on BW Parkway is a monster!) I have been to the Holy Cross program in Silver Spring and they have quite a large supportive following. Howard Univ also has a very extensive bariatric center with supports groups too.

Hi Lexie,

How r u? I am looking to have the VSG at the end of the year. I am doing the 6m nutrition program now @ Providence Hospital. I had 2 visits so far, Aug will be my 3rd month. I went to a seminar in Greenbelt that Dr. LoMenzo held. I was interested in Dr. Kligman but he did not do seminars at Greenbelt. I also attended a seminar @ Howard Univ, Dr Fullum, who also worked @ Providence Hosp. Providence Hosp is where I plan to have my procedure w/Dr Mark Rickford. I attended a seminar, also Virginia Hospital Ctr. I had a hard time making a decision, but asked several questions at the seminar and chose Dr Richford. I really wanted to meet Dr Kligman, but I never came to Baltimore. I would like to keep in touch and see how u r doing. I would also like to attend some support group meetings prior to surgery, just to see how everyone's journey is going. Keep me posted. Peace & Blessings to you!

There are a bunch of people in woodbridge I saw on here too. I live in DC. My doc has a support group every third thursday. I think we should start one in DC on a Sunday or Saturday...Avoid the traffic. Does anyone want to meet up?

Hi everyone! I'm a newbie (though I've been lurking for a while). I live in PG Co, but I work and go to school in DC. I'm planning to get sleeved in October--fingers crossed for all the pieces coming together. I'd love to get together with other pre- and post-op sleevers in the DC area. Maybe Teaism on a Saturday or Sunday? (I live for their Lavender-Lemon-Mint tea...) Or the Meridian Hill Park drum circle on a Sunday afternoon? Other ideas?

I am in Mount Rainier, MD, just outside DC in Prince George's County. I would be interested in any gathering.

I just got approved yesterday and should get scheduling information sometime next week. I live in Alexandria but am going through Johns Hopkins for the surgery.

It looks like a few people in the area have been through the surgery in the past year (would be lovely to get an update from them), or are on the verge (good luck to the gal whose surgery is on the 25th!). I think I heard that Inova Alexandria has begun a bariatric program and likely has a support group. The ones at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center are great, but it's a haul to get there.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
