Help! No one in my house understands!

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone. I have been lurking around and reading your posts for weeks now and I must say you all have saved me, more than once. However, now I need some personalized help.

I am 6 days post op and struggling with the whole depression problem. I don't have my food crutch and it's hard. To make it worse, my sister and her 5 year old wild child came up to "help" me. Well, the two of them and my roommate are killing me. They are loud, messy, and exhausting. I can deal with all of that. What I am having a problem with is the enormous amounts of food, junk, fast food, and starbucks that is passing through my house. It's absurd. The smells are making me crazy. I want it sooooo badly and they just don't get it. I can't even hide because the yummy smells waft through every coner.

I guess what I wonder is how does everyone else deal with such horrible temptations? How do you get others (skinnies, as I call them) to understand the emotional battle that is so much of the post op journey? Thanks foryour help!

Well, I won't be much help, because I go through the same things as you. My family loves to eat (who doesn't?) but it is sooo hard on me sometimes.

All I can say is, in time, you will be able to eat more and from my experience, even if I only get a tiny bite (all I can really handle) I am satisfied. It gets rid of the urge. I know you can't really do that only 6 days out, but it won't be long. That's easy for me to say, but honestly, it will fly by.

I wish they would be more considerate to you, but in reality, no matter WHAT they eat, it's going to be tempting right now. Sometimes my DH asks me to pick something up on the way home, and I feel like I will scarf down the whole bag of food before I get home. But then, when I do get home, I just take a bite of his and I am completely satisfied. Really. Then I eat some Protein. Just to get it in.

I hope you feel better soon. See if there are any support groups you can go to in your area. Or, I have found that this board is great for venting or just reading about other's problems/successes. Hang in there, because it really is true, like everyone says, it WILL get better.

Good luck to yousmile.gif

I feel for you! Though I get what I call a sort of longing with savory luscious smells I really have not been hungry since surgery. I think that will start to happen for you too.

It is important not to take it personally- I really cannot blame my husband and son for filling the house with cooking smells- they have not had surgery and though they really try to be thoughtful and eat in other rooms I would rather hang out with my husband , at leat for his main meals. Your sister and her daughter are really not trying to hurt you- they are just doing what they do! You don;t do that now because YOU are going to lose a ton of weight!

Just keep your eye on the prize- and once the hunger hormone clears out of your system I think you will find it easier. Seriosuly - when you ate like they do you got to the point where you chose this life altering surgery and just remember you will soon be able to have anything you want, just tiny portions of it.

Here's a sympathy hug!!!!

As a funny side note- I got in the car the other day to go to my post-op appt. and discovered my husband had FILLED the car with snacks- movie theater popcorn, jelly Beans, licorice, chocolate, crackers- he wanted to do it when he was out doing errands, etc. to spare me so there it was- a rolling snack mobile!

Just keep reminding yourself of why you did this. Remember you will be able to eat soon enough, just not in mass quantities.

I quickly had to go back to cooking for my family even while on a liquid diet, a few days after surgery I even went with them to get pizza. YOu just have to fight through the temptation and remember the end outcome you are looking for.

Thanks everyone. It's just difficult to try and redo everything my body knows. I'm feeling a little better about it today and know that it'll be even easier as time passes. I would almost prefer to be cooking for the house right now so I wouldn't have to smell pizza or mexican food. :)

I remember even though the food smelled great, when I finally was able to eat something, it made me so nauseated, I couldn't bear the smell of food -- even to this day if I get full, the smell of food makes me leave the table because I no longer want it or can stand to be around it. So as Meggie says, wait for the ghrelin to leave your system -- you really won't want to eat much afterwards :)

I have to focus very hard on me and my new life to get through it sometimes. I either come here to read or post, or I'm walking at my fav stores or a local festival in these small towns around me, which is hard in a way because the delicious food smells, but I figure the walking can only help my weight loss. I will admit I am spending more money, not necessarily expensive things but I am indulging on litlle things. The things I buy usually are something to contribute to my appearance like shoes, handbags, sunglasses, clothes, etc.

When I am in a situation where I can't escape the sight and smell of food, i get a Protein shake that I really like and remind myself, this is what is necessary for me to become healthy and slimmer, and even tho the just liquids are temporary, my life is now forever changed on amount of food, so I just have to get used to it. It helps knowing I will eventually get a small taste of the things I love. The liquid stage is the hardest. Right now the food I am looking forward to most is a tablespoon of refried Beans with some melted cheese and verde salsa and greek yogurt lol. This is wild to me cuz at one time this wouldn't have been all that appetizing compared to other things lol

Just knowing that I am not alone helps me so much! I am so grateful to the people on this board!! We can do it! We'll get through it together!

:hippie:

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
