OK, I know this should probably go into the food section, but this is a double question:

1) How long has your doctor suggested that you stay on Mushies?

I started Mushies last Friday (end of 2nd week post op), and my sheet says that I won't start solids until post op week 7. Is this about the average? I know it is needed, it is just so boring. I have loads of recipe, but I am craving texture!!!

2) Anyone have good Mushies Breakfast ideas?

I am over protien shakes or watered down oatmeal or greek yogurt. Any ideas or what worked for you?

Thanks,

Steven

Technically, mushies/purees/soft foods were all in the same category for me.

I could have scrambled, soft poached eggs, cheese, refried Beans, chili with or without Beans, soft white fish (scallops, tilapia, mahi mahi) were all allowed. The prescribed mushy time for me was 2-3 weeks and then start introducing more solid meats. However, I struggled with solid meats so I stayed on mushy/soft foods for about 3 months because I could get my Protein from food sources much easier by sticking to soft foods. I still enjoy soft Proteins because it's just easier. Steak (all varieties cooked to medium) is the best dense Protein for me, it works best, doesn't sit heavy in my sleeve, and I can eat about 4oz, beef brisket is another great option. For some reason, beef/venison both work much better over chicken. Scallops are my favorite seafood protein since I can eat about 4-6 (based on size) of those little yummy boogers.

I have inquired about this myself, but my plan was Clear Liquids for 3 days, full liquids until 14 days out, then soft foods until one month out, then normal foods as tolerated. However my plan seems much more lax than most on this site. Yours seems a bit more typical. I may extend the soft foods on my own for an extra week just to play it safe. Im 3 weeks out now and everything has gone down well so far. Good luck!

I'm on mushies and made machaca for breakfast! It's shredded beef (left over from the crock pot) mixed with eggs and green chili sauce! Oh, and dont forget the cheese! I'm only able to eat about 4-5 small bites but it's loaded with Protein and it's so yummy! It's something I usually make for breakfast burritos but minus the tortilla! I also make enchilladas: left over shredded beef (2oz), cheese, enchillada sauce all blended together! It tastes just like my homemade enchilladas, again minus the tortilla!! (See a mexican theme here? My fav food!)

There's a lot of other recipes out there that i've found on the eggface website! You might wanna check it out! http://www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/

Let me know if you need any other recipes... I've got tons!!

I get to have mushies starting Monday, my three week anniversary and stay on them until six weeks. Then I add more solid foods carefully though some things like hard boiled eggs they recommend waiting until 8 weeks. Seriously if I can have pureed savory foods after all this liquid I am a happy girl!

How about scrambled eggs with melted cheese? That is the thing I keep dreaming about.... of course I mean 1 egg and probably half of that but....yummm. I am so sick of Protein drinks!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
