Sex and sleeping on your tummy or side

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on Sunday and I have severe tailbone pain (from a recent pregnancy) that makes it very painful to lay on my back/butt for long periods of time but I'm finding that my tummy hurts too much if I lay on my side and I won't even attempt to lay directly on it. Please let me know how long it took for you to resume either of these sleeping positions.

Also, I didn't really get an idea as to when I could resume having sex although my take home paperwork said "whenever I feel able". Well, my head says I could go today, but I don't want to damage anything. How long did everyone wait before getting back into the "swing" of things? ;)

I'm a stomach sleeper, and can't wait to be able to do it again!! My butt hurts too from laying on my back so much, and internally I aggravate my incision when laying on my side. I'm 3 weeks out and not as in much pain, but I don't want to chance re-aggravating by trying too early. As far as sex, I was told 6 weeks, and as I felt able. biggrin.gif

LOL I couldn't get past the subject - but - I felt right as rain after 3 or 4 days. I found that I could sleep comfortably at an angle - with pillows supporting me on both sides but it doesn't sound like you could. When I was pregnant - I found sleeping on the couch the most comfortable - I could sleep on my side, getting support from the back - and a pillow under my stomach to "prop" me up.

As for the other - if you feel "froggy" - Jump!

Good Luck!

I had sex by two weeks out... we were careful to be sure... but even that seemed like forever.

I'm 5 weeks out today and I'm able to sleep any which way....

Using a big pillow against my tummy I was able to side sleep about two weeks out.

I am three weeks out and already sleeping on my side comfortable. I can't sleep on my back drives me nuts. Start off slow and try it for a few hours.

Good Luck!

I had my surgery almost a week ago and I've figured out a way to kinda sleep on my side. I also have lower back pain and I just couldn't get sleep on my back. I use the breast-feeding pillow "The Boppy". I put one of the ends underneath my stomach (I find the side of my tummy where my stomach is is much more comfortable than the side where I had the drainage tube - that is still a bit too sore). I put the other end between my legs. The pillow seems to relieve a lot of pressure enough for me to tip towards that side. Then I sleep on the couch so my back is towards the pillows. I'm also inclined a tiny bit with help from the couch. Once you get the right positioning, it's very comfortable and I've slept much better. I hope that helps you!!

I guess I'm a freak of nature. I woke up sleeping on my stomach on day 4 post surgery. No pain. The Hubby and I got down to business on day 7.

I realize I'm not "normal"....but then I don't know what normal is!!! Lol!

I wish you the very best and a speedy recovery!!

I am a side sleeper too & slept in the guest bedroom the first 4 nights at home so that I could take up the whole bed & prop pillows around me for support without shoving hubby out of the bed! It was uncomfortable the first 3 nights as I couldn't side sleep & could never get comfortable on my back. By night 4 though I could sleep on my side if I tightly spooned a pillow against my abdomen...still doing that actually but each day gets a bit easier. My doc said no sex until 2 weeks.

Haha Christal! Nice. Well me and my hubby rocked it on my day 8, his day 6. I guess men are ready sooner! LOL As for sleeping positions, I slept on my left side the night of my surgery. It was the only thing that helped the gas pains. But I'm a weirdo too! One of my favorite sleeping positions is to lay on my back with my legs sitting "indian style". LOL

I slept on my side the first night after surgery and I had sex at 2 weeks. My boyfriend was not having it at first (I was the frisky one lol), he was scared that it was too early but hey I was fine, my paper also said whenever you feel able.

I tried sleepin in bed on my side day 3 and it was so QUIET not being in the hospital, that I think my brain & body went with it. I propped a pillow under my belly, and had my fiance shove one behind me so I didn't lean back...needed support. It worked! Day 7 post-op was when I decided we were 'going for it' I would say make sure you're smart with position, obviously he can't be on your belly...giddy up! wink wink.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
