Is 40g of protein a day enough?

Recommended Posts

I am really, really struggling to get the Protein in. The only thing i like to eat at the moment is Soup. I have tried adding the unflavoured protein to the Soups but the unflavoured part on the tub was a lie! Yesterday i had a protein shot which caused dumping, so they are a no go for me.

What would happen if i only hit 40g protein a day until? I can just about manage half a shake and half a bottle of Isopure.

Your thoughts, as always are appreciated!

I didn't get Protein in until I hit mushies and was able to eat chicken/tuna/egg salads, and other mushy proteiny foods. It's not ideal to drop low on protein as it helps with healing and will help with energy, but you're doing your very best. Stay hydrated, and keep adding it when you can.

Unflavored protein doesn't mean "tasteless" and that's what I struggled with the most. To me, the unflavored was the worse tasting and smelling ever.

Hang in there, it gets better ! ! !

It's normal since you're so early out. It'll get easier when the swelling goes down some. I have about decided to not even bother getting that unflavored stuff, it just sounds disgusting.

I am having great success with the Syntrax Nectar brand of Protein powders. They come in many flavors.

I mix the Lemon Tea flavor with Crystal Light Peach Tea. Love it.

Another favorite is the strawberry Creme with 8oz of Lactaid Milk, a spoonful of SF vanilla pudding powder, 4 frozen strawberries, and a few ice cubes. I mix that up in my blender and it almost comes out as thick as a strawberry shake from McDonalds. I even got some low fat Whipped Cream and I put a squirt of that on top. What a treat. You get 24 grams of protien in one envelope, and if mixed with milk that is even more protein. I do the same with the chocolate, but I use chocolate pudding powder and don't put the strawberries in.

I got some frozen blueberries this weekend and I am going to mix those with the Vanilla flavor. Excited to try it.

Luckily my WL Clinic sells it. But if your's does not here is a link.

If you don't like this link just Google Syntrax there are several sites that sell it. I reccommend the sample pack you get 12 different flavors.

Good Luck

I use unjury brand Protein drink. chocolate splendor is the one I am able to tolerate the best. It tastes like chocolate milk/nesquick. I mix it with 8 oz of skim milk. It has about 20gms of Protein. I have 2 of these a day. I'm not sure where you are at since surgery, or what your program calls for, but I am to have between 70-90 gms of protein daily. Low-fat cottage cheese was and still is a friend. Soft scrambled eggs, Baby food meat with a little low fat mayo, light artifcially sweetened yogurt.

Hope this helps. I wouldn't have gotten through without this Protein Drink. I have tried others, and just couldn't do it.

Everyday will get easier..:)

my dr. and nut says NO Protein drinks EVER!! i just don't see how you can not drink them!! they expect you to get your Protein in, but you have to eat so little!!!

i will be drinking them anyway! LOL

Kelly :)

WOW! That's weird. Protein Drinks are almost universally accepted. What's their reasoning?

The 'reasoning' behind the NO Protein drinks rule is that you eat food, you don't drink it. You shouldn't drink your calories...it's a slippery slope etc...... that's Kaiser Richmond for ya!

Protein drinks are also not on my dr/nut plans, so I did buy one kind (the only kind I've ever found here) and try it a couple of times, but it didn't really work for me anyhow. And yes, their philosophy is that you should eat real food as quickly again as possible, as it's good for your system and etc. So I've been getting all my protein from food since straight away post-op. Most days I get 50-70g in.

started my Protein intake yesterday (4 days after surgery) and i managed to get in 62 grams of the 60 my dr. required for post op during full liquid stage.

Isopure RTD's are a blessing to me because i literally forced the shake in my mouth for the AM serving. shakes just don't sit well with me it seems. i just sip 10oz of Isopure per serving until i hit 60grams of Protein throughout the day

good luck

You can pick up the Unflavored protien mix at any health food/nutrition store. Sprinkle it on your foods, you can bump up your protien that way.

I prefer the Isopure (plain) 97% pure protien without fillers

and also Egg White blend (as opposed to whey or Soy)

Sprinkle away!!

My Nut has this mantra "No calorie containing beverages" (including milk and protein shakes) and it was hammered in during our class. But that's only AFTER you get to solid foods. both were encouraged in the beginning liquid phases.

Yep, no Protein drinks EVER is the rule from my nut and surgeon. They don't want you drinking your Protein, they want you eating it!

During your liquid stage they say not to worry about the protein so much. I am only on liquids for 2 weeks then can work on getting protein in.

I did drink a few of them anyway, but I hate them and they are nasty, so I am good with eating my protein!

Kelly :D

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
