Surgeon Provided Support Group

Recommended Posts

Does anyone's doctor do this? What do you think of them? My surgeon has it once a month, and I am going to my first one July 11th. It's in his office, both surgeons plus the nutritionist attend to answer any and all questions.

I want to make it a permanent part of my post-op and attend each month.

Do you attend anything like this? Inquiring minds wanna know. :biggrin1:

Yep, the clinic I'm using has a support group. I've been a couple of times, and plan to continue attending for at least my first year.

Yes. I had to agree to at least six support group meetings before they would perform the surgery. My hospital offers a monthly meeting for Lap Band folks and also they have a weekly meeting that is lap band and RNY folks. The Licensed Clinical Social Worker who performs the Psych evals leads both the monthly and weekling meetings. They are really helpful. Last month's meeting had my surgeon nurse in there to answer whatever question you might have, which was really nice. I'ts always nice to meet and discuss how I am doing with people in the same boat.

My surgeon sposnors a support group once a month. I attend, but lately have had some mixed feelings about it.

For one - there are people in our support group who are afraid to voice their real concerns, feelings, etc. in group, esp. if it trends toward criticism, because they don't want their office visits to be adversely affected. That's something no one should have to worry about, but some don't feel that's the reality of the situation (not me - I'm vocal regardless  )

All in all the benefit of getting together with other bandsters is what it boils down to. THe occasional time that they bring in a medical person to talk with you is valuable, but for the most part I've yet to get a lot out of it that I couldn't get by meeting up with people in any other way.

Yep, my Bariatric Center has weekly meetings. I go to as many as I can because this next year is going to be totally focused on losing weight so even when I don't get a lot out of a meeting, I still know I "stuck to my plan"!!

Yes, My Doc has a support group in his facility. They meet once a month. The facility was perfect for this. There is a nutritionist, exercise physiologist, psychologist and of course the Surgeon. This was so nice because you didn't have to run all over the place to make all your appointments. Everything was done right there. What a great experience. All of them sponsor the support groups.

My surgeon requires us to attend at least 3 meetings pre-op, and 2 post-op, and if he finds that you aren't attending he will not preform your fills. We go once a month and he is there as well as the nutritionist, and sometimes the psychologist.

It sometimes is really helpful to go to these meetings, but sometimes they arent. ie: I've been banded since May 8th, 2006, and all together including my pre-op liquids Ive only lost 17lbs, but there is someone there banded the same day as me who's lost 43lbs. It sometimes does discourage you, but Ive met some great support ppl at my meetings.

Please don't get discouraged. You're doing great. My group doesn't "allow" us to discuss our losses for this exact reason. It's impossible to gauge your own progress from other's because we're all different. I guess that's why we don't talk about it. You're doing fine!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
