Post OP Pain - pulling, feels like muscle cramps - Help?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 3/3/11. Really feel fantastic, however, just wondering if anyone has "muscle like cramps" where their incisions are. I called the doc's office, spoke to the nurse and she said the largest incision will sometimes give people trouble. Gosh, didn't think I would have problems like this. Any suggustions?

I got really bad pain nowhere near my incisions when I walked for the first 6 weeks - it felt like the stitch you get from running. Someone suggested it might be referred pain (which I think it probably was), but I didn't get much pain at the actual incisions. Our bodies have been through a lot and sometimes they don't heal as fast as we think they should.

I hope your cramps go away very soon.

I feel your pain I really do, I had horrible Belly pain around the largest incision site.. It was awful.. Getting up off the recliner couch ect was extremely painful, I slept in a recliner for about 5-6 weeks after surgery and I couldnt bend over to tie my shoes or pick things off the floor... I was checked for a hematoma or hernia and all felt great .. They told me not to lift or do anything that caused pain and give it another 4 weeks.. That was at my first checkup.. So it took about 5 weeks. It was sore and felt like a muscle was on its last limb and ready to rip open.. I was so relieved when it went away, they said some people get this and they dont know why! I hope your pain subsides soon!

My doctor told me that it could because that incision is where they removed the stomach and depending on the size or trouble they had getting the stomach out I could be sore for awhile.

Your muscles are bruised and it takes awhile for a bruise to heal. Sometimes they may go into spasm as well. A heating pad may help, but time is the best healer. Continue to move, though--using the muscle will keep them from stiffening up. Good luck to you!

Yes, I am 15 days post-op and my left big incision is still swollen. You have to think about the fact that this one had the biggest tool inserted, and as mentioned above, where the old stomach was removed from. We took quite the beating in that area. Are you wearing your binder? I still where mine most of the time. It keeps me from getting so sore in that area. Everything you do seems to effect that incision. Including going potty, turning, getting up and down, slumping, bending over, etc...

Hang in there! It will gradually get better. No worries...:)

I am experiencing terrible mid back pain for days now. Wondering if this is related to my surgery I had on the 15th...I was off the pain meds since day 4 but today I had to take one..what is going on with me? Wondering if it is muscular, or my kidneys, or a sign of dehydration. On Thursday at the Dr they said I was only 35% hydrated.

Totally normal! Doc explained the large incision had the deepest stitches. This too shall pass and be but a distant memory.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I have good days, then days when the muscle spasms take my breath away. I do have a one month check up this week so will discuss with my doc. However, the posts above have been VERY helpful. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply to my question.

I had mid back pain under the right shoulder blade till about the 8 week mark, it was especially bad when I had to sit up all day at work. In retrospect I would guess that it was a nerve yelling about swelling or what not of things being different in there now.

I had them day 2 and was still in the hospital and they gave me benadry and it helped me relax the muscles

UPDATE: Visit and exam by the doc yesterday. He said the muscle spasms were nothing to worry about. He explained they use stitch thread as big as the "thickest fishing line string you can buy." And that the stitch is deep and my body sees this as a foreign object. With time, he reassured me, I should be fine. He also said people complain about this muscle spasm like pain usually 3-6 weeks post op. I'm in week 5.

Thanks again for all your comments. I love this website!

Have a super day.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
