Question for post sleevers!!

Hi, I just had my pre-op appt. I am getting sleeved March 14th. There was basically just one thing that freaked me out that the nurse mentioned. She told me that I may wake up with a tube down my throat and not to freak out. I instantly knew that if that happened to me, I would definitely freak out for sure!! She said it depended on the anesthesiologist and what they think. I am just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Maybe it never happens, maybe it happens a lot more than I ever thought or knew. I just don't know. She also freaked me out about blood clots a little. Walk, walk, walk! I hear that is the key!!

That sounds odd to me. I have not had my surgery, but I had back surgery, as well as several others. I was intubated (tube in throat) during my back surgery because my oxygen level fell. They monitor that while you are out , often with a clip on your finger that measures oxygen in your blood . If it falls they put the tube down to open the airway. They do that to get more oxygen to you and that is a good thing! If you have apnea, that could definitely be a problem that happens. However, I did not wake up with a tube, it was pulled out as the surgery ended and though I had a sore throat and needed oxygen for a couple of days based on what had happened, I can't imagine waking up with a tube in my throat.But I am by no means a total expert!

They wake you up with the tube still inserted to make sure that you are conscious enough to breathe on your own before they remove it. I remember waking up and I didnt have the tube in, but I was very groggy, and I kept falling back asleep and would stop breathing. The nurse would have to wake me up when the machine started beeping because I wasnt breathing. So maybe the tube isnt such a bad thing, you will be so out of it you might not even notice....maybe... lol

Either way goo dluck with surgery, it is an amazing journey. Im only 2 months out and my life has changed so much already

This is my experience with tubes: all what I can remember is that right after surgery they woke me up and said: "Open your mouth", I did and they took out a tube from my throat. I didn't feel a thing and fell asleep again... No other tubes were in my throat after that...

For all my 9 surgeries I was told the same thing..."you might wake up with a tube down your throat". I never did remember any tube and I have severe sleep apnea.

I think they have to tell everyone this, just in case someone wakes up a little early. I would not let this worry you.

For my surgery I remember waking up with the anthesologist standing right beside me. I had some pain in my left shoulder (they warned me I might) and I told her about it. I went back sleep. When I woke again the pain was gone and she was still standing right there and I asked her to hold my hand. Then I went back to sleep. I woke again and I asked her to give me a huh!? LOL and she said, "you want a hug?" I said yes and she leaned over and gave me a hug. Then I woke up in my room. It was a funny experience! LOL

I have had to have surgery twice once was for the actual sleeve the 2nd was to place a drain tube in because of a leak. Both time the breathing tube was taken out before I woke up. However my throat was really scratchy and sore for a day or 2. The blood clots yes you want to walk as much as possible. And use the little breathing thing they give you as much as you can and make yourself cough. You don't want to catch pneumonia after surgery not fun at all.. All that walking is also good for the gas pains you may or may not have after.

Girly your going to be on soo many good drugs You wont even remember your. name..lol. I don't think I even remember tubes at all...lol The first day I had surgery I remember getting up later that day and walking around the nurses station about 5 times. You will be restless and you will want to get up and get moving(that was my case) I just couldn't stand being in bed all day. The good thing is that you will have a pain pump for the times you can't go to sleep. YOu just hit that magic button and off to neverland you will go..I guess enough trying to be funny. The more you walk and the more you sip the faster your going to heal. I think you will be alright..Keep us posted

I've NEVER been told this.....but it would have been NICE if they would have. I woke up ONCE when I had Kidney Stones removed and I've NEVER forgot it! Next surgery I told the Doc PLEASE don't let me wake up with the tube...he said YOU REMEMBER THAT and I said YES I will NEVER FORGET THAT FEELING. I only woke up for a SEC and I heard she is awake and then that was it....gone again! LOL

This DID NOT happen to me when I was SLEEVED....didn't even get told it MIGHT happen!

I was told that same thing for my gallbladder last year and my sleeve these year. I woke up tube free both times.

Thank you so much for your replies! It is so interesting to hear what those first few moments are like waking up!! Hopefully the good drugs will make me not care one way or the other! I am ready to get this over with already!!

What I remember from surgery:

Moving from the gurney to the operating table and having the surgeon smile at me

A distant memory of moving from the gurney to the bed in my room after surgery was over.

That's all--no tubes, no hearing anybody talk, nothing. I had general so I know I was intubated but I didn't even have a sore throat afterward, just a dry mouth.

Never woke up with the tube -- both for my endoscopy before I had the surgery and after my actual surgery.

Honestly, I was so out of it, I don't remember anything from the day of my surgery, from whenever I woke up to the getting me into my bed. I didn't really feel fully conscious until the next day. My guess is that if you do wake up, it will be really brief and you won't be "with it" enough to be traumatized.
