Dr. Kelly - Complications

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what happens if you have surgery with Dr. Kelly in MEXICO and you have complications. For example, If you need to stay in hospital an extra day or two will you have to pay extra? What if you have a leak (I know the chance is very slim), will he repair it at no extra charge. I'm really afraid of complications in MEXICO because I will not be covered by insurance until I get back to Canada. I can manage to pay for the surgery but will not have much left over to cover extra medical expenses.

I know there was a person there when I was there that DID NOT have complications just wanted to stay longer in hospital because they were scared to go to the hotel. THey would have let her stay in the hospital another day - and from what I understand not additional cost. She finally decided to go to the hotel because there were a couple of us at the hotel and she would not be alone.

Dr Kelly and Trish are amazing kind Christian people and very easy to talk to - Best wishes!

My question is a bit different...does anyone have any info on where I can go to check out Dr Kelly's past complication rate? From what I've read on this site, he hasn't had any, but my husband wants to make sure I've checked everywhere I could to check on his history. Thanks in advance.

When I was there I met a lady who had to go to OR again to have a few staples loosened as it seems they were too tight at the entrance of the stomach. It was not a complication but something that could make her transition to solids a bit more uncomfortable. Dr. Kelly had it done without any additional costs and she was very happy with his professionalism, honesty and care.

What I was told was that if the complication relates to the surgery they will take care of you at no additional cost. You can give them a call and ask these questions, put some case scenarios and see what they say. In my experience, they honor their words and it does not even have to be in writing. :D As for checking complications, I think there is no registry for this. What you can do is to check his credentials as a certified bariatric surgeon both in Mexico and USA. I did that and was satisfied with the results. I do not have the links here now but I got them from wasabubblebutt blog. You can do a search for her name here and go from there. I am sure you will be very satisfied.

Thanks Brazcan. When I get a little further in my planning I certainly will be calling Dr. Kelly with some questions.

every case could be different but I wouldn't worry about the stuff you can not control. Dr. Kelly is very professional and he will take care of your problems no matter what.

Thanks Mick,

I know I can't control it but what I need to know is can I afford it. On the off chance that I have complications and have to spend a few more days in hospital or have more surgery, I need to know I won't have to pay 1000s more. I can barely afford the surgery as it is.

I am in the same boat, when I went to Mexico I went with all the money I could muster. I can't guarantee complications won't happen but I can only speak for my personal experience. I did not have a complication but I am allergic to penicillin, so when the medical staff at the hospital found out they wanted more money, like 100 dollars more. I told Trish that I couldn't afford the extra cost and if I knew I would have brought more money. When I talked with Dr. Kelly later that day he said he would handle the additional costs and told me not to worry about it. A major complication would cost more but I would assume that Dr. Kelly would perform the job he was paid to do until it was done correctly making sure you didn't have additional expenses. He is very caring and you will know that after a five minute chat, I would be like mike and just do it.

good luck

I am also allergic to penicillin and scheduled for my VSG with Dr. Kelly on 4/13....Should I talk to them about the extra cost? I am allergic to just about every pain medication and antibiotic that I have ever been prescribed so this could be very interesting. This new wrinkle won't stop me from going, but it does make me a little more nervous.

I wonder if Dr Kelly charges extra if he finds a hiatal hernia during the surgery and repairs it? If anyone knows please respond.

Hay Sadie, How are you getting on with your recovery? Did you get a chance to ask about complications with Dr. Kelly?

I wonder if Dr Kelly charges extra if he finds a hiatal hernia during the surgery and repairs it? If anyone knows please respond.

I asked one of the coordinators this question (Christi) and she responded today saying that he charges $700 to fix the hernia and also $700 if the gallbladder is removed. I've asked if this is something that we consent to before surgery or if the surgeon uses his own judgement and she indicated that we need to consent to it beforehand...so it's optional if you want either of these repaired/removed.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
