What kind of Protein drinks?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I"m new in the process and am trying to think ahead. What kind of Protein drinks do you drink? I have a chocolate whey Protein Drink that I like and I was wondering if that would work? Or is it a specific kind of Protein Drink? Also, I'm wondering, aren't Protein Drinks high in calories? I see there is a new Protein drink about by Special K and wondered if that would work too. Their bars are pretty good.

Anyway, thanks!

There is a thread in the food section where you can find samples of all sorts of Protein drinks. I would not stock up too much ahead of time because people say all the time that things they liked before surgery, they hated after surgery.

There are many good Protein Drinks that are 120-150 calories and low in carbs. Some people just hate all Protein drinks!

My nutrionist gave me a list of specific ones to try and to choose one on the list or I could alternate I just had to stick with the same kind in one day... So I would find out what they want you to do.. After the surgery they suggest the whey Protein which I got to go with the regular shakes.. I choose the SugarFree Carnation Instant Breakfast because I can mix it up and I dont have a funny smell of a bottle..hahah

My nutritionist told me that they are good if they have Protein isolate and NOT protein concentrate. Isolate is higher quality protein and usually more expensive but it is a protein that the body can absorb more easily and completely. I like Wheybolic Extreme from GNC, very high quality isolates I was told.

Hi Optasia,

It is true as Daisy said, your tastebuds will probably change post op. I personally loved powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury after surgery and really couldn't tolerate much else at that time. Most everything made me want to gag. Unjury does have single pouches for samples, so that way you're not spending a ton on giant tubs.

Good news is though my tastebuds have returned and I can again drink most of my other favorite Protein drinks.

I love Isopure. The fruit punch flavor (Artic Punch?) over ice is REALLY good to me There are 40g of Protein per bottle. I tried a few and then bought a case from my surgeon's office. I have Mango Peach right now and it's pretty good. Very peachy.

I couldn't have any red or purple dyes pre-op though, and the punch is red, so if you did want to try, make sure you're clear for red and purple dye post-op.

Isopure RTD! I actually don't mind them at all. Some people complain about an "after taste" or a hint of clalkiness. Yes, it's there (the last reminds me of weak koolaid and it has the same mouthfeel as liquid jello), but they're not bad. I'm pre-op and trying out the drinks before my actual surgery.

BSN lean dessert is my favorite. I like the chocolate fudge pudding. I like the banana pudding too and I mix the two together sometimes.

I only like ready to drink (RTD) shakes because of the smell and the mess. I like Premier (available at Costco), Isopure (I only like the blue raspberry), Isopure smoothies (has sugar, but I believe it's from the fruit), and Labrada Lean Body. I also don't mind GNC's Total Lean shake. Oh Yeah! is also good. Atkins taste okay too, there's also a low carb Slim Fast which doesn't taste that bad if you're in a pinch.

I went to GNC and Costo and bought one of each of the shakes they carry (and are good for you), some made me really gassy and some I preferred the taste of over others.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
