premier protein shake

Recommended Posts

I got some chocolate premeir Protein Drinks at costco. They taste good but after looking at the Protein there are two different kinds added to it. Cassein and whey. I know whey is what we want but is it a big deal if it has two different kinds? The shakes are 160 calorie, 1 sugar, 3 fat and 30 protein. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I drink those too. Kaiser South San Francisco says they are fine to drink. I haven't had any issues with stomach pains or what-have-you from two different types of Protein. I never noticed that before.

Wow, I never noticed that either. It is probably how they get the 30 grams of Protein for only 5 carbs.

I love those, and I never noticed that either! Ha! I was just happy I found one that tastes okay, had lots of Protein, and didn't make me sick! I have the chocolate, and my mom found the vanilla now! I can't wait to try those.

Don't get to excited about the Vanilla just yet. I thought they tasted like a bad vanilla pudding. Something was just off about them. I really like the chocolate though. We are downing the vanilla because we bought them, but once they are gone they are never getting bought again.

As to Casein and Whey Here is a small article LINK about the pro's and con's of both. Whey seems to be the better choice overall, But Casein is digested much slower, so it probably helps with keeping you feeling fuller longer. It is also not as purified as whey is. In mixing the two in the drink they are prob trying to help the drink give a longer lasting feel in the stomach, while keeping the carbs and fat low. It might also be why the drinks taste a bit better then your average Protein drink.

Per my nut I am not technically supposed to have Protein Shakes. But figured I would give them a try because otherwise I was only getting around 20grams of Protein a day. I just wanted to make sure that since I am "cheating" it might as well be on something that is good for me protein wise. I did read that cassein makes you feel fuller longer. It takes me a good 2 to 3 hours to finish my shake and that is what I have for Breakfast. Well I blend half of a banana and some ice in the premier chocolate shake also. Its yummy!

As far as I know, a mix of different Proteins is usually desirable. Protein from different sources behaves differently, some are absorbed fast, others are absorbed slowly, so a mix of slow and fast basically has you covered for a longer amount of time. I believe they also contain different amino acids so a mix gives you a full profile of those. Some info about Protein blends:

Protein blends provide a timed-release effect when combining Proteins that digest at a faster or slower rate.

  • Whey protein digests fast, is high quality and is ideal for building muscle and immunity.
  • Milk (casein protein) is slow digesting and delivers amino acids to your muscles over a longer period of time, helping prevent muscle breakdown.
  • Egg white protein (egg albumen) is medium digesting and has an excellent amino acid profile.
  • Soy protein is a vegetarian source of protein that may help reduce heart disease, is rich in phytoestrogens, but is not as good as whey, milk or egg for building muscle.

And some more info here: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/perfectprotein.htm

I was told to use protein isolates and not protein concentrates by my nutritionist. Since we are all working hard to get protein in vs. a body builder who eats and drinks a ton more protein than we do, I trust them that it makes a difference. If I can eat 150-300g of protein, I can probably go for the cheaper concentrate - but if I am working hard to get in 60 - 80g, I want to make sure that my protein is the good stuff - and good stuff, from what I understand is the actual usable part because of some protein types, the body can only absorb 80% or less and of others 90% or more. So the 10g of protein you make drink may only be 8g if it's concentrate or 9g+ if it is isolate.

Here is some more information about isolate vs. concentrate:

Oh, and as for the advise not to drink Protein shakes, I don't think this is necessarily a good idea. I think a low calorie Protein shake is an awesome supplement with a very high protein-to-calorie ratio. If I drink 30g of very high quality Protein (see my post above) which has 140 calories, I have a lot more room for veggies and other good nutritional stuff.

Lean ground turkey for example only has 22g of protein and 150 calories and if I eat those 4 oz. I usually cannot fit in any veggies or fruit or "healthy fiber". If I drink my shake, I have a lot of good protein taken care of and I can eat some things that are butritionally good for me.

Now, if you then go and eat the other calories in donuts and candy, that's the wrong way.

For most of us, I think this is good info (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/issa4.htm):

Whey powder

Because whey protein does have a high biological value (BV), it probably offers the most benefits when you are dieting on very low calories. When your energy intake and correspondingly, protein intake is reduced, whey protein could help you get greater utilization of the smaller amount of protein that you are taking in. Whey protein also provides a way to get high quality protein without the fat. It has been suggested that whey may have other advantages besides high protein quality. These benefits include enhanced immunity, increased antioxidant activity and quick absorption.

And that's why I think there are a lot of benefits to still having Protein Shakes, good quality protein shakes.< /p>

Yes I never quite agreed with the no Protein Shake, but I was trying to following orders! I feel much better this week and not so weak since I have been having the shakes once a day. I agree that as long as it is a healthy choice it shouldn't matter. I feel like I am at least getting in some good nutrients!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
