Hey everyone' date='

I'm new to the forum and was excited to see there was a thread for African Americans. I had my appt yesterday and my surgery is scheduled for Oct 21. Going into the appt I had my mind set on the lap band but my doctor recommends the sleeve. I did not give the sleeve much thought because it involved more cutting and figured the band would be less invasive. But after doing some research and hearing people's stories I'm rethinking the band. But as an African American woman I have sooo many questions. Hopefully you guys are able to help me out.

1. After the surgery, were you able to eat small portions of "soul food" ie Mac and cheese, string Beans, fried chicken, jerk chicken, ox tails things of that nature?

Hey corcor85, I seen your post the other day and meant to respond. As for the food and eating small portions of soul food you have to take it gradually. It could be months before you can eat some of those things. Everyone is different. Somethings you may not be able to tolerate even months down the road. I try a lot of different foods and typically don't have many problems. After the initial post op diet and when you are officially back to normal foods you can try anything you like. I try and keep my carbs and sugar intake down.

Hello all. I just came home today from the hospital after being sleeved on Monday. All went well and I feel great but the "head hunger"has set in today. I am getting in my liquids and trying to distract myself. Any and all advice welcomed.

Congrats on being sleeved!

The head hunger will go away. Say to yourself, i just had surgery and there is no way I could be hungry, and I can't get anything in anyway.

Keep getting in your liquids and you'll get that full feeling which is the main thing in the first few days. After that periods you'll need to get in your Proteins as well. Stick to the Protein during your post-op diet and don't cheat. Good luck to and congrats on being sleeved.

Well I'm back amongst the living. I was sleeved on the 9th and finally went home Friday evening. Had problems getting my HBP under control, fever, vomiting, and because of my deep short veins - problems with iV. I have bruises ever inch of my arms, wrists, stomach, hands, and finally had to put them in shoulder. Having hard time trying to get Protein Drinks n liquids in. I am improving everyday.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
