Extremely High BP Post op HELP

Recommended Posts

I am getting some crazy off the charts BP readings post op. Pre op my BP was a little high 130's over 90's post op 170's over 110's. Did this happen to anyone? My surgeon said I should get to gether with PCP and figure out what is goin on. Is that just his way of runnin away from responsibiliity ?

Hi Brownbear -- I see no one has posted and I think it's because (or at least I) don't have any experience with this -- I would go to your PCP asap because elevated blood pressure is nothing to sneeze at -- but it could have something to do with the surgery, but it might not -- I guess I just wanted to say that we are here for you even if we don't know or have any experience with what's going on.

Please take care and let us know what happens!

Hi

Are you in pain? Or stressed because you are in the hospital? Either way it wold be a good idea to look into it with your PCP. I know that my BP is usually 120s/80s but the day of my surgery i was in the 150s over 90s. Im still a little high but I think its being in the hospital that is causing it.

Hi BrownBear,

My blood pressure was extremely high post-op (175/100)! I do not take blood pressure meds of any kind. They kept me in the hospital an extra day to get it under control. The doctor believes it was due to the anasthesia. It has since regulated and I have had no problems. I am 4 weeks post-op.

I hope you are feeling better. Blood pressure is serious!

Take Care!

I have not had VSG surgery (YET!!!) but have had several surgeries and also as a nurse, I can tell you this: pain will elevate your BP as well as stress (both mental and physical) from surgery. I would keep a close eye on it now that you will be starting a new BP med, because if it WAS related to surgery/pain, and regulates itself, you don't want the meds to bottom your BP out! Your PSP will advise you best, but I think this too shall pass!! wink.gif

I was on 4 blood pressure meds and my bp went extreemly low after surgery. I came home on no meds and in the 5 weeks since I have had to go back one med. When I asked the surgeon anything BP related he ALWAYS says to go to my PCP for that . So he is being typical.

I've never had BP issues but after my surgery, I experience what you did, a ridiculously high BP. I was prescribed something after my 3 day release, went to my primary care physician a few days later and he took me off of it and said it was a result of the anesthesia. I've been fine since I quit taking it and using hindsight, there were only three or four days where my BP spiked and subsequently went down to normal.

My BP went thru the roof post op. I was told it was normal post op. My blood sugar also was all over the place. I am 4 weeks post op and my BP was 123/74 today. I would to give your body a chance to adjust before worrying about it.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
