So much for hoping for an approval - time for other options

Well, I found out yesterday that my employer is changing insurance companies and the new company doesn't cover the VSG for someone with my BMI. It really makes no sense that riskier, more complicated, more expensive procedures get covered but my BMI has to be over 50 for the VSG. *facepalm*

Anyway, after a few months of not being sure, it looks like I'll definitely be covering the cost of this on my own. I could probably try and appeal, but I really have no medically necessary reason to get the VSG over the other surgeries. It's just my own preference, so I'm doubtful any appeals would be successful.

So I need to figure out how I'm going to pay for this. I have some savings, but not enough. Does anyone have any recommendations for loans? My credit is decent, and though I make good money, I'm only a temp and my employment is never really a guarantee. I still don't want to end up paying a 30% rate on a loan though. :/ Although the thought of blowing through my savings is kinda scaring the crap out of me, I've made up my mind about this surgery and I know it's something I need to follow through on. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

you could try care credit, it is a company that does medical credit cards. or you could just google medical loans. Or talk to the surgen that you are going through sometimes they have financing in houe. Good Luck

Before you start spending your own money, I would look into the appeal. I think you said the new insurance cover other WLS? If so, there is a ton of research out there that can support getting a sleeve. In addition, if they are covering the sleeve for the higher BMI and the other surgeries for lower, it's somewhat illogical and sounds like something you could win.

I would seriously give this a shot. Paying a deductible and a max out of pocket beats paying for this on your own. In addition, there are obesity law attorneys out there that may be able to give you some advice.

I worry that if you pay for the VSG on your own, and there's a complication, you will be stuck with the bill for that as well. I'm not sure how that works, but it could be financially devastating.

Be tenacious........I'm betting you can get them to pay. I'll be rooting for you.

Have you looked into going to Mexico for surgery. I just had mine on Nov 22nd in Tijuana at the OCC, with Dr. Ortiz.. Wonderful place GREAT staff, very safe and a ALOT cheaper. That might be a better option for you, look into it.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
