Confused....Please Help

Recommended Posts

I am 5 days post-op and my doc's office said I could start full liquids for the next two weeks. I made some cream of wheat with 2/3 cup skim milk but could only eat about 1/2 of that (saved the rest for Breakfast tomorrow). I've been sipping Water all day and made a Protein Drink for lunch but didn't get a whole lot down. I'm not having any problems swallowing but I not sure how much I am supposed to be having and I don't want to overdo it then get sick. However, my stomach is constantly rumbling. I'm sure part of it is gas but I feel part of it is hunger. Am I not eating enough? How often should I eat and how much? I see on this site some who are already eating pureed mushies by the 2nd and 3rd week. I would love to have some mushies but I am scared. Why are all of our doctors so different with surgical procedures and eating procedures? What is safe to try and what is not? I will be so glad when week 6 gets here and I know I will be able to try something real. I bought several WLS cookbooks and they have mushie recipes for lap band patients at 2-3 weeks. So why do VSG patients have to wait so long? Sorry - getting grustrated.

We have to wait longer because of the suture line in our stomach. Our stomach is healing early on. My diet is 1 week Clear Liquids with Protein shakes. Week 2 full liquid. 4 oz of Protein shakes 3 times a day. Add Protein to cream of wheat, applesauce, yogurt w/o fruit or to cream Soup. The goal is 60 grams of protein and 64 oz of Water. My nut said hydration is the most important thing for the first few weeks. Each day try increasing your protein until you can hit goal. Week 3 and 4 pureed foods. Anything you can put in blender and make to a toothpaste consistency. At week 4 can also start some soft foods.

Every dr is different, but this is an abbreviated version from my post op class

My post-op diet sounds just like Lisa's. It is possible that you're hungry - some of us do stil feel it even with less ghrelin being produced. But a lot of times it's just gas or acid. I assume you're taking some type of acid reducer?

You might want to try one of the clear Protein drinks, like Isopure ready-made. They taste kind of like kool-aid. You can sip on them all day like Water and they don't get gross after awhile like the Protein drinks you mix yourself do. They will help with the hunger instead of drinking plain Water.< /p>

It is so hard and frustrating. But it will all be a distant memory and you will be wearing smaller clothes in no time, so just hang in there. Try to distract yourself, keep busy to your energy level. Get out and do something non food related. It gets better.

I can't really say for sure because I am on Clear Liquids only until I go in on Monday and then hopefully I'll start full liquids but I would think that adding Protein Powder to soup/cream of wheat might help you stay fuller longer! As for docs being different, it is a little annoying because each person is different so I would say to just be totally open and honest with your doc and NUT and maybe you'll progress faster then others!? We all heal different! I know me and my body and I'm pretty sure I'll be the slow one and need extra time at each step (which is already shown since I'm still on clear instead of full)!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
