Drinking Liquids hurt going down

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I am a newbie hererolleyes.gif I just had my sleeve on November 10, 2010 and was sent home yesterday. I have been sore in the belly area, but not too bad. The worst pain for me is the feeling when I drink anything it going down. I actually have it down to a science.....well sorta. When I have a little baby sip of Water -- by the time I finish swallowing, the pain happens from seconds 2-5 and at the 6th second, I feel bubbles and I have to burp. THEN.... it goes somewhere else in tummyland and hurts again for like a few seconds and goes away.

I have been reading a few other boards and have also heard about people being best friends with gas-x to releave heartburn. I havent heard of that from my doc.

If anyone has been in this crazy situation, please help because I dread drinking water.....sad.gif --- not to mention the Vitamins....

Your new tummy is still very swollen on the inside and tender. Even small sips can be very uncomfortable. Experiment with cold vs warm drinks. Some do better with different temps. As you heal this will get better. I promise.

Your not alone i had and still have those same issues i did try Gas X strips last night but i still have to try after eating (im on mushys now) for the real test.

so as far as i know its looks to be common and hopin as more time goes by with healing and swelling will go away.

good luck and welcome to the loser side

Joe

Same as me; surgery on the 10th and pain at first. It has gotten better for me today. I think it will just take some time. They weren't kidding when they said it would take over an hour to drink a protien shake.< /p>

I had the same experience after my srugery Oct 19. The good news is that it is very likely the swelling; you have not had anywhere near enough time for scarring to be the cause. It is very likely due to swelling around the staple line at the top (entrance) to your new sleeve. Trust me, tt get's better! I am finally able to drink this week without the pain. Before it got better with normal drinks, I found that warm (not too hot) broth and drinks were the easiest to get down.

On a side note, you mentioned that your Doc did not tell you of the joys of a close personal relationship with Gas-X. Did he talk to you about getting on a stomach acid reducer (like Prilosec OTC)? If he didn't you may want to bring it up at your post op appt. It really helps with any potential acid reflux (you will see many posts on the board here about it).

Congrats on your successful surgery and the best of luck for a speedy recovery!

Hi guys, my sister and I were sleeved thursday, similar complaints. I can barely even sip anything without a lot of pain, first in the chest area then a few secs later down in the tummy area. It kind of feels like something is lodged and that the

Iiquid is having to leak around it to go down. Hurts badly and makes me not even want to take in any liquids. I'm scared if I don't keep sipping I will become dehydrated and it scares me that I will not even be able to takes in soft foods when it comes time for that. I know it still just a few days out but I'm nervous. The chest pain comes also when I lay down and when I have to burp, but only some of the burp will come up but some goes back down. Frustrated! Any advice on how to bypass this stage.

Sister sleevers! Awesome! Talk about a good support system.

My advice is do NOT worry about the soft food stage. When you get there, you will be ready. Or you stay on liquids till you are. No biggie.

For now you do have to worry about not getting dehydrated. Sip small sips. Try diff liquids at diff temperatures. Some people prefer cold, some warm.

And don't lay flat. Many people sleep in a recliner the first few days.

Also, you added this post to an older post. That's ok, but you may want to start a new thread so people will see that your info is current.

Hugs!! It will get better.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
