Bad Bread....Baaaaaaad Bread.....

Recommended Posts

Some background first.....

I had my first fill last Thursday. I was on liquids for 2 days -- did good on that -- and then gingerly started to eat normal. Well, as close to normal as you can. :rolleyes

Today I made me a yogurt smoothie for Breakfast and thought I would make me a small ham sandwich for lunch with some salad. A lunch I have had in the last couple of weeks with no problems.

So I took a small bite of the sandwich -- bread and all -- and oh boy!

:help:

It hurt so bad!!!! I even chewed it for a long time.:guess I sat there for a bit, trying to figure out where I went wrong. I drank all my Water first, it was a small sandwich, good protien in the ham......ah ha! It had to be the bread. So after the horrible feeling went away, I tried just a small piece of the ham, no bread (hey! I was still hungry!:) ) and everything went down ok. So I finished my ham slice -- still ok but I made sure I chewed, chewed, chewed! Slowly at about half of my small salad -- still everything ok, but I was so full!:speechles But at least I didn't feel like someone was running a bottle brush up and down my esophagus and wanting to throw up. So it had to be the bread.

I guess it's true that things really change after your first fill. I haven't had any problems with any food since surgery, but now......I really have to watch what I eat.

Yuppers! bread is a definite producer of PBs for many. I refuse to even try it... which is a good thing because I'm a breadaholic! :)

Me too, me too! Oh, gosh, I thought I was the only one that couldn't hardly tolerate chicken. I thought there was something wrong with me. I found out you have to cut it againt the grain and chew, chew, chew.

The drs. want you to eat healthy, but there isn't much left without eating chicken. :cry Thank goodness I like fish.:)

Sorry, but I am still laughing at the bottle brush up and down the esophogus analogy.....

Ahem, yes, sorry, but with experience in low carbing, you CAN do this. There IS life beyond bread.< /p>

I think......

I have a secret for chicken. Now most people hate the thought of chicken cooked in the microwave, but trust me this comes out so juicy and flavorful you'll be able to eat it.

Lay a couple of pieces of boneless, skinless chicken breast on a plate. (I trim off all fat with scissors)

Sprinkle with McCormick meat Tenderizer (Seasoned) and black pepper.

Lay another plate over it and microwave on high for about 4 minutes.

Uncover, turn chicken over, sprinkle the tenderizer over the chicken, recover and cook on high for another 5 minutes.

You may need to adjust the time for your microwave, but don't try other tenderizers! I have tried many many many tenderizers and this is the only one that works so well without being too salty. The orange color of the tenderizer keeps the chicken from looking grossly white.

I've been making chicken this way for years and my family loves it. Of course, I adore grilled chicken but it is usually too dry now.

Ooh, P'Nut I'm going to try this. I had depended on chicken as a good source of Protein for a long time after being banded and now I can't even tolerate it.

I use that tenderizer on all meats. I love the flavor and it really keeps the meat from drying out.

You'll have to fidget around with the times until you get it just right. But I think you'll like it. :)

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
