2 wks post & unable to move to mushies...

Recommended Posts

Let me preface this post by saying that I KNOW what I signed up for. I know that this is going to be a journey of good days & not so good days.

That being said...Im not sure waht is going on with my body. Saturday, i went to a wedding (would have been 10 days post)...and by the time the reception started, I was STARVING. I was feeling sick before heading to the wedding, so I didn't eat my Soup as planned. I actually knoshed on 2 super soft cheeze cubes and one small piece of seedless watermelon - and a small bit of chicken breast with no problem at all. I washed it down with a bottle of apple juice - to my surprise & delight. NO adverse affects.:rolleyes: Yesterday, I had some mushed red&Beans & rice from popeyes (about 3-4 teaspoons), again...no adverse affects. On both days, those "meals" left me satisfied & happy

So today - I figured, Let me try some runny mashed potatoes. EPIC FAIL. Sick as a dog. And on top of that, I know that there is NO WAY I'm getting down all my liquids & Proteins. I can barely stomach any of the Protein that I was drinking pre-op, and even with my Vitamin supplements, I'm dragging. I have to take a 2-3 hour nap every day...ZERO ENERGY...even after my dose of B-12.

I'm down almost 35# (including the pre-op diet)...but im wondering how soon I'll get back to feeling a little more "normal". The nausea, lethargy, inability to really take in any kinda of meal is wearing me down. Especially after having been on a 2wk pre-op liquid diet...then the 2 wk post-op liquids...*ugh*

I go for my 1st follow-up tomorrow, and will discuss all of this with my surgeon...but...

somebody...gimme some encouragement...PLEASE!!! :(

I completely, totally and 100% get where you are coming from. I don't think I have any really great advice to give except to tell you that you are not alone.

We just have to be super patient this time, and give our stomachs time to heal. We are going to have to try new things and if our tummies don't like it, we'll just have to try again another time. I personally find potatoes are a little rougher than your usual other new things. They do make me feel very full and fast. In fact, the first time I tried them post op I remember feeling nauseous for the first time since being in the hospital. I had to take a nap for about an hour and once I awoke I felt much better, went back into the kitchen and just drank some powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup. I felt ok, and was able to get some Protein in.

I actually did not get my requirement of Protein today. Not good! I'll need to make sure I do that tomorrow.

You are doing very well, just need to be a little more forgiving to yourself. Your stomach is in control now, and not your brain. It used to be the other way around. *wink*

Hang in there!!

Good advice Diva!

I just for the first time tried the Syntrex nectar products. I decided to get the sample packet because

I will be flying soon and wanted to take some Protein with me. I think they are very good.

Protein is important for healing so I would suggest trying to find one you can tolerate. Potatoes don't

have any Protein in them anyway, so they really aren't the best idea for a meal when you're getting

very little protein daily.

I am in the same boat sister! :) I am 19 days out, and I normally feel weak all day and need/want a power nap everyday! Protein is the key to helping us heal and feel normal again. I'm trying this new stuff from GNC, it's like a protein shot. A tbsp of this stuff is like 27 grams of protein. The taste, well...not too terrible, lol. I'd try drinking more fluids too. That's seems to be helping me. :)

I hope you get to feeling better soon!

I'll echo what everyone else said: you absolutely need to find a Protein supplement of some sort. Until you can eat your Protein you need to drink it. Protein will help you feel energetic and it will help you heal. Without it, you're going to feel tired and ill.

It's not uncommon to have trouble hitting your protein goals early out from surgery. I don't think I hit my goals at all until the second week post op, and I certainly didn't hit my goals regularly until more than two weeks out. Just keep trying, and it should get easier day by day.

If you eat a food that makes you ill, stay away from it for a while before trying it again. I had a lot of trouble with eggs at first so I had to wait until my body was ready. If you find that moving up to mushies makes you sick most of the time, I'd back down a stage for a few days and let your tummy heal a bit more. If it's just the one food giving you a problem, just avoid that one food and take comfort in the fact that you'll be able to eat it again someday. I would say that potatoes aren't the best choice, but only because for me feeding the carb monster makes it hungrier, so I try to avoid foods like potatoes and Pasta. This early out the calories and carbs won't hurt you, but it's a great time to start choosing better food options. It will definitely make the first several months post op easier on you.

If you haven't yet found a protein you can tolerate, try some samples. Do the Protein Shots if they go down better. It really is very important to get your protein in, and you're not at a point where you can do it with only food.

Good luck, I hope you get to feeling better soon!

I thought I was the only one feeling so weak & tired. Supposed to have clears--no to low calorie until I felt weak. I have always been able to get my liquids in but just started adding full liquids with Protein 4 days ago. I'm 8 days post op today. I am getting at least 60 gms of protein daily as well as 64 plus ozs of Fluid. I'm sipping all day long & when I'm not I'm napping. I have lost 17 lbs to include the two week pre-op diet. I try to be a little more active every day but I feel so drained. When will I get my energy back? I can't even imagine going back to work feeling like this. Any suggestions?

Protein shots are not the best form of Protein . You need whey protein. Read on them and see if they

are collagen protein which comes from boiled cow hide. Every doctor and nutritionist I have ever

talked to said it's important to get your protein from whey.< /p>

My NUT said the same thing about the Protein Shots. Made me sick just thinking about it! Whey is much better. My personal fav it EAS Carb Advantage, they don't leave that nasty protein aftertaste, They actaully taste good!

Submitting paperwork to ins this week!!! Wish me luck!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
