Looking for anyone that has gone through the Group Weight Loss Trips to Mexico for their vertical sleeve surgery. I have never posted online but I found this group and want to see if they are legit. Thanks everyone. :001_smile:

Hi CKnorte,

Thank you for your response. How are you doing so far?

How was your travel after the surgery? I am going to be flying from San Diego to Houston after so if you have any tips that would be great.

Travel after surgery was ok for me. I met my husband in San Diego and we drove home (7.5 hours). I assume to Houston it's a direct flight.

It should be fairly easy. Make sure you buy some gatorade or fuze or something in the airport. You won't be all that hungry or wanting to eat, and you will probably be tired. You could ask for a wheelchair for transport within the airport. I know you probably won't need it, but it will get you through security faster, and you won't have to walk far. San Diego isn't huge but if you are flying into IAH, it is pretty big...so why not get wheeled around, when else will you be able to do that???

On the plane (I don't know your size), but I would ask for a seatbelt extender, tell them you had surgery, that way you don't have a seatbelt too tight on your new incisions (you will be a little swollen in the belly area and you may have a little tenderness). For the drive I had my husband bring a pillow, that way I could hold it against my belly for the bumps in the road.

Wear lose clothes, I wore some super soft pijama pants, that I can claim are just yoga-ish pants....soft on my skin, and lose on my belly.

But really it wasn't hard.....

I was at the grocery store and costco the day after we got back from San Diego.....I drove and was fine.

I didn't take all the pain meds, I didn't need them....and I started on Protein shakes and broth for a week, then full liquid for a week, then soft for a week, and now I am on regular food.

Thank you for all the great information. I have written it down so that I can make sure to remember everything.

I went to your blogspot and read your blogs. Very interesting to read and I am going to keep reading it to see how you are doing.

So in a month you have lost 23 lbs? That is really good. Do you still get hunger pains?

No hunger pains, sometimes I forget to eat because I'm not hungry.

I have realized that I do get "head hunger". Last Friday I made spaghetti for the house, it is my favorite, and I knew I was going to have some, I was going to have a treat....since surgery I have never been hungry, all day Friday I was starving (or so I thought)....I had my noodles that evening, about 1/2 cup of Pasta and sauce...and I was done......so I couldn't pig out, but I also realized that Pasta is a "trigger" for me....so I will have to keep it out of our food rotation.

I am having my surgery November 19th in Tijuana with Dr. Martin Lopez and I am super excited. The next few months are gonna seem like forever I am sure. Haha.

Good to know about the food triggers, I will look out for those. :001_tongue:

I also had the surgery in TJ with Dr. Corvala. Ditto on everytheing CKnorte said. Everything went smoothly without a hitch. I would recommend it to anyone including my family, which I'm already trying. I have lost 24 lbs now. A little hunger sometimes but I very quickly fill up. that half a cup of spaghetii and sauce sounds about right. It's funny, when I ate before I would full gradually and even after being full could still continue eating for awhile. Now, I get full very quickly and can't eat another bite. Its great!!

How long has it been since your surgery? Did you fly home after the surgery? If so, do you have any advice for me. I will be flying on a nonstop (thank goodness) from San Diego to Houston.

How much weight do you want to lose? I want to lose 120 to 130 lbs. and can't wait to have my surgery so I can get starter.

Thanks for the help,

AD

I would suggest you read momoftwo's recent story about complications following surgery in Mexico. And others...at least know the risk you are taking. I live in Houston and can recommend doctors if you need a doctor.

Bariatric surgeons here in Houston tend to decline helping a patient having complications from a Mexico surgery. This is very serious. I had surgery here, and am actually thankful for that. But even then I didn't know the best doctors. You will learn more about your doctor here or on obesity help website than ever. But you need to google your doctor's name and get the experience of others.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
