Lab results back... might have to cancel?

Recommended Posts

Today I went to the hospital for my lab workup, chest x-ray, and EKG. That was 7:30 this morning. I just received a call from my surgeon's office and the nurse stated my potassium levels are to low and they might have to cancel my surgery if I can not bring them up. They are calling in a script as I am writing this. I NEED to start taking this medication immediately. I have waited and waited for this and now......:sad0: My emotions have been up and down lately and this seems like a crushing blow to me.... I feel like crying.

My level is at 3.3 and they want at least 3.6. My surgery is in two weeks. The nurse said they will take lab work again the day of surgery. If still to low, they will have to cancel.

Peeps I need some words of encouragement.

Thanks for listening.

Deb

Are you on pre-op diet? you can add potassium to your diet with bananas and tomatoes.....or go to the health store and by some potassium supplement.

Remember if you take the supplement to start out slowly...they usually sell it mixed with magnessium, so getting the "runs" is a normal consequence if you start of on too much....

Hope all goes well and that your levels are what they need to be for surgery.

I just started my pre-op diet yesterday. Nothing but Protein shakes, 1 low fat yogurt, 1 cup of skim milk and of course sugar free Jello and popsicles.

Thanks for the kind words.

I had the same thing happen 4 days before I was scheduled for a hysterectomy. I was freaking out because I wanted it out. Take some potassium pills, drink a lot of orange juice. I able to get my levels up in a couple of days. Also have them check again in a couple of days.

Just look, it is just 0.3 away and I think with medicine you can get it up at least to where it should be.

My husband had problems with his potassium after his heat stroke and he had to take supplement and Cknorte is right diarrhea is a definite side effect. My husband was able to get his back up after the potassium supplement.

I sending good thoughts your way!!!!!

Deb,

I totally understand, but my surgery was cancelled until I don't know when. Just keep your spirits up, and start taking the potassium supplements, and it will all work out. :sad0:

I know this is so scary and frustrating after all you had to go through to get to this point. You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there and believe it will work out.

hugs,

Maddie

Don't worry honey, it's very easy to get potassium up in a few doses, you have a couple of weeks. You'll be fine.

You will be fine. You aren't that low. Take the pills they give you, and you will be where you need to be soon. Take care, and good luck.

This is probably very frustrating for you. But look on the bright side...potassium is fairly easy to increase and you are only .3 away! Add a banana and take the supplements they give you. It will all be alright and work out! Hang in there!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
