This may sound weird and gross

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm really afraid to post in reaction that someone may find this gross but since I am hidin behind my laptop I have a question

-during pre-op blood testing do they test on a std panel? I was an unlucky person who contracted herpes at birth. I am now 35 and living well but I am in need of this surgery because I have been overweight all my life. So if anyone could tell me if the blood test they perform pre-op shows std/sti's?:thumbup1:

My doctor did not (gives you a copy of your blood work). I can't see any medical reason why they would test that for this surgery.

Good luck,

No I don't think it will. I think blood markers if any would not really be any different from someone who has had cold sores round their mouth. Please don't worry about this.

I think this is something you could just inform your surgeon and hospital of on your history and physical forms. I can't see how it would affect you having surgery. Surgeon's are used to operating on people with various health conditions and they would just take to proper precautions - although I can't see why they would need any in your case. But, I do think it should be part of your medical record. For example, they may catheterize you. In this situation, they should have this info in your record just in case.

I am a Kaiser member and they will do an STD blood panel if you are sexually active. You have nothing to be fearful about, There are millions of people living with Herpes who have surgery and are just fine. From a medical stand point I would share this information with the surgeon especially if you are taking any medication. Good luck and I am sure you will do just fine!

My hospital insisted on a pregnancy test, but no STD tests BUT always tell your doctor and your lawyer EVERYTHING. These are words to live by. When they are prepping you for surgery, let them know you have herpes. It will not be a big deal to them, but you never know how they might have to monitor/modify what they do with the Foley catheter so that it doesn't irritate your condition. Don't be embarrassed--hell I started my period the day before surgery and had to tell them that lol! They just deal with it. Never feel bad about your condition--it's just a medical fact, not a moral judgment. Good luck with the surgery!

If they do test for stds it would be for HIV and syphilis.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
