Waiting...is going to drive me crazy!

Recommended Posts

Paperwork is turned into the insuance company, finally! Started this process 3 years ago, got through consults and psych eval, and everything. Then had a wonderful little suprise roadblock we named Tyler and had to wait to start the process over. Had to start over with new insuance conpany learn all the new requirements which included a 6 month diet documentation required by my employer. Took my doc almost 2 weeks to get that to the insurance lady at my surgeons. I think everything is in order this time and hopefully I am just waiting for approval. But this whole waiting this is driving me nuts! I just really want to be approved. When should I start calling them to find out the status of my claim?? It just got turned in Monday but I have heard BCBS IL sometimes comes back fast but takes awhile to mail it out.

Hi guys I'm in the same boat. My paperwork was submitted to Federal BCBS of Kansas City on Wed. the 14. My insurance case manager at my surgeon's office told to expect a 2 week wait, but Stephany you are right the insurance people would know before your surgeon's office so what not start calling to find out. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!!:)

They told me to expect a 2 week wait. I called them after 1 and it had been denied already. My appeal took about 3 weeks from the time the insurance company recieved it to the day my surgeon's office got the approval. The wait sucks, but once you have an answer either way and can move on to the next step, it gets better.

Grrrr BCBS is doing it on purpose now!! So I called to check on my status today only to have the girl freak me out by saying was was denied because of investigational, oh wait that was in February. Put's me on hold then tells me yes you were denied again but appearantyly they didnt look at my new info or their new policy! So she has sent it back for review with notes as to the new info!!! And I wait some more!

So I finally got my approval yesterday! Hoefully I will be sheduling Mon. For anybody going through BCBS IL here a warning they are denying the VSG for being investigational even though their policy has changed. I had to call them and tell them their own policy had changed. Maybe now that it has been brought to the medical reviewers attention it wont be such a problem any more! Good Luck All!

Yay, that's fantastic! I called yesterday to check my status and so far it seems as if BCBSTX is on the ball with the policy changes, but needed more info, which ended up being my 3 months of a weightloss program. I got that right away, and faxed it myself to BCBS, since it would have taken forever with the Dr.'s office. I'm hoping it won't take more than a day or two more..... maybe I'll be next! And let us know about your date :thumbup1:

Way to go. You have to be on the ball with the insurance companies. I can only imagine how many people out there take no for an answer and don't know they can appeal, or simply lose hope.

Hi Papillon,

I am new to all of this. I have just started the process my first appointment is on the 29th of September. Good luck with your surgery! I too am having Dr. Podakemeni. Do you have BCBS of AZ? That is what I have. My regular doctor stated it wasn't that hard to have them okay things. After your first appointment did it take long to get a surgery date? I have heard a lot of good things about this Doctor. Are you having to do a special diet before going in for surgery? Congratulations as the 13th is fast approaching. Thank you!

Thanks,

Rxsunset

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
