Had my pre-op appt. today...

Recommended Posts

Well I had my pre-op appointment today and finally got the diet paperwork. And I am a little shocked. After reading so much here and seeing the amount of carbs it takes to really be sucessful I am left wondering.

We talked how in the first 3 months especially that you stomach is tight and to take advantage of it and try to lose alot of weight then. Considering I want to loose 60-70 pounds I would love to lose 50 in the first 3 months. Is that a good goal or am I setting myself up for failure???

Ok here are a few things that are bothering me about their diet. In the clear liquid stage they have a sample day. It has 800 cals, and carb intake is 80-100 grams:crying: REALLY??? On full liquids they have 106 g of carbs...

I want this to be a life changing way of life! Would it be bad if I aimed A LOT lower for the carbs?? Also they do a clear liquid for 1 week. What have others done. I am thinking I may extend it to 10 days at least just in case of a leak. Any advice??

Thanks. Lynda

I would talk to your doctor about the carbs - that seems very high to me. Just remember the difference between clear and full liquids isn't that huge. My surgeon had me on clears for only 2 days and full after that. Staying on clears may become a bit bland & I've found it hard to find Protein in "clear" that I could gag down.

I'm sure others will have suggestions. But, when in doubt, I've learned to call & ask my surgeon.

So exciting that you are so close!!!!

What in the world could you consume on Clear Liquids that have that many carbs. I couldn't even consume that many carbs on full liquids, and mushies, I was lucky if I hit 30 a day. Which I was super strict, but still, that just doesn't make sense. I've never seen a bariatric post-diet consist of that many carbs with any of the surgeries, RNY, DS, or the Band.

I would definitely call. Since you only 60-70 to lose, you may not drop weight as fast as some of us that had double that amount to lose, so do not get discouraged.

Thanks girls. ALL of the carbs listed come from juice. It says no sugar added juice, and it has it listed to drink several times a day. I don't drink juice now so I am not going to start! I will discuss this the nutririonist when I see her.

Awwwwwwwwww okay, that makes sense. My program limited our juice intake to 4 ounces a day if any at all. I think some recommend juice because it tastes better than Water, and at least it would help with the hydration.

My post-op program didn't say much about carbs except to keep them low. It did state things I should not eat initially and later on during the losing phase, but because the pre-op diet they had me on limited my carbs to 30 per day or less, that's what I continued in my initial post-op diet.

I was only on Clear Liquids for 2 days and then full liquids for like 2 weeks. I then progressed to soft/mushy food that I stayed on for another month I believe. I'd second/third people's suggestion to talk with your surgeon/nutritionist. Ask your questions and get clarification until you're content with your plan (even if it deviates from their recommendations). I just feel that it's nice to have input from the professionals to help us make the best decisions as possible.

As for the weight loss rate, it's so hard to guess these things before hand. I tended to be very conservative with my estimates so that I wouldn't be disappointed with the loss. This kept me from getting too disappointed and set myself up for failure. BUT, you know yourself best, and maybe this kind of thing wouldn't bother you too much.

Good luck!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
