I can not remember why it is that we are not supposed to drink carbonated drinks. I tried a little today and it did not bother me at all.

I was told that the bubbles from the carbonation could cause pain and possibly cause damage to the healing stomach .

I went to my pre-op meeting today and they explained that the carbonation can expand your stomach over time...That's why not carbonation....She said, just because things may go down easily it doesn't mean we should be eating or drinking it.....no soda, no beer, no champagne ever....<Those were her words>

It's wasted/empty calories. I can drink a soda occasionally without issue. My surgeon does not believe it will stretch out the stomach. Essentially, you drink, you burp, the carbonation has dissipated. It's not like the carbonation sits in there for hours. It hits your stomach, burp, and it's emptied out of the stomach just like Water is emptied out.

Grant it, I'm 7 months out, and didn't have soda for several months so my experience is that I can have a few ounces once a week without issues.

The coffee reason is debateable-

My doctor said it does not count towards your Fluid consumption, and it is a stimulant and could make you want to eat more.

I didn't drink coffee for the first 6 months, but now I have a few cups in the morning with my Protein in it.... That is all the caffiene I have.

I don't drink soda.... and yes, told it can stretch the stomach... but believe me.. I use to drink a 12 pack almost everyday!!

( welll........ maybe not THAT much. but ALOT )

I'm and addictive personality- I KNOW this about myself... so I stay away from my addicitons...... I should NEVER have tried chocolate........ found out I can eat it and I never really liked it like most do........NOW....... I can't stop.

My biggest demon!!!

Carolyn,

I've been reading on OH that Protein heated to over 130 degrees will turn into a hot mess. The people on there who have Protein drinks make a paste of the Protein some Water, then add it to tea or coffee that has been heated (or cooled for brewed coffee) to 130 degrees. I ordered some unflavored protein from powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury that came yesterday. I also ordered their $5 thermometer so I can check for 130. I may give that a try this morning in some hot tea.

Bambi, Kaiser says the same reasons for no carbonation as your doctor does.

Same here on the carbonated drinks (expands the stomach, can deter healing of the staple line, etc).

Was told that coffee irritates the stomach of many people, increasing acidity - which can again, damage your stomach.

I don't plan on doing either! But, I have never been a real coffee or soda drinker - so, tis easy for me.

In my humble opinion I think you are too early to drink soda. I don't think your stable line is ready for expansion that can be caused by the bubbles.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
