I was just wondering how long did most of you take off from work? I am scheduled to have my sleeve done on Jan. 19th. I work in a school and wonder how long should I take off.

What a GREAT day the 19th is (lol - it's my birthday) - anyway - I had my surgery on 6/12 (a Friday) and returned to work the following Friday (I was in the hospital for 4 days/3 nights) I would have returned to work on Thursday; however, due to intestinal "issues" I decided to stick close to home.

I think this was plenty of time for me - I have a desk job that does not require any heavy lifting, so I was fine with 5 days off.

Thanks VegasAngel.

Happy Birthday. Yes, the 19th of January is a good day. I am anxious, nervous, excited, etc... I planned to take 9 days off and didn't know if that was enough with all of this talk about being weak and nausea. Scary stuff. I bought some "protien bullets" from a place called iBariatric that have 45g of protien in a 3 ounce tube. I didn't know how soon I could drink them though.

Depends on your doctor's post-op diet - Dr. Aceves says 10 days clears, 10 days full - if you can see through those bullets, then they'd be "clear" liquids, if not, then they'd be "full" liquids -- I never tried them, as everyone said they were very sweet and I wasn't able to tolerate anything sweet following my surgery - 7 months out I still have that same issue - I don't consider it a problem though, more of a blessing! I think 9 days off work will be sufficient - I was definitely tired at the end of the day; however, I wasn't anywhere close to "passing out" or anything like that.

Thank you VegasAngel. So many people have told me that they are too sweet. I guess I should try them before the surgery. Good thing I didn't buy too many of them.

I like the Protein bullets. I usually dilute them with Water - 1/2 Protein and 1/2 Water. I drank them sometimes when I was banded. The hospital actually gave me a protein bullet on my meal tray after my sleeve surgery, so they consider it a clear liquid. 45 g of protein is a lot for one sitting, so I usually do half at a time.

I also work at school and did my surgery during the Christmas break so I went back to work on day 14. I probably could have gone back to work 9-10 days after surgery.

Good luck!

I too work in a school, I was sleeved on 12/29, and went in on Monday, 1/4 and knew I was not ready. I took off Tues. & Wed., worked 1/2 a day on Thurs, and then worked all day Friday. I was POOPED at the end of the day Friday, came straight home and napped. So this next week is my first full week back. I am in an elementary setting, so the pace and energy was just not there for me last week. I may take off Wed. this week, if I feel I need a rest mid-week. My principal has been very supportive, so that is a great gift I have had. The "work" itself is not the issue, I just did not have the energy on Clear Liquids. After moving to full liquids on Tues. I feel more more ready. With hindsight, I would have taken 2 full weeks off.

I was sleeved on Dec 21st, and was supposed to return to work on Dec 28th. However, over that weekend, I started feeling lethargic, dehydrated, etc, so I went ahead and took that week of Dec 28th off too.

And only because I knew we would be busy and I would be running around a lot. If things were slow that week, I would have gone in.

My surgery is scheduled for January 27th. I plan on being out through February 3rd and working 1/2 days on 2/4 & 2/5. I hope this is enough. Luckily, I also work a desk job & it does not require a lot of physical activity (a large part of my sedentary lifestyle).

I was over cautious and took 3 weeks off. I could have gone back after a week but I enjoyed being off for 3 weeks and focussing on the new me. You will be fine after 9 days.

I'm glad I found this thread... I was going to ask the same question. I know how much BS I went through after my band removal, but that was a lot of problems that had nothing to do with the surgery, specifically. Anyways, thanks for the info. Do you guys think 7-10 days then? :thumbup1:

Im with attitudefree, I took 3 weeks off (which was wayyyy more than enough). I was in the gym after 3 days (doing treadmill walking). I just continued with my time off because I knew I would not get it like that again. Some people do get extremely fatigued after surgery though but that did not happen to me. Good luck with everything!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
