JUST scheduled my VSG with Dr. Aceves for Jan 11th...eek!

Recommended Posts

My husband and research guru came across this forum & has insisted I register & post, claiming it's the most informative out there! So here goes... I don't know all the ins & outs yet, so if this is in the wrong place I apologize.

I understand there are quite a few of Dr. Aceves' patients on here & I would love to hear your feedback. My husband said he had a hard time coming across any negative comments about the Dr, his staff & the hospital, so I guess any of those would be helpful too. Not that I want to hear anything negative, but I'm sure it will help with my overall view of things.

Never in a million years did I think I'd be going to Mexico for surgery, so here's hoping I've made the right decision. Anyone else on here going to be there the same week, Jan 11-15? Be great starting this together with someone!

Thanks, hope to hear from some of you soon!

Hi Kai

Hi Kai,

I had my surgery with Dr. Aceves on 11/19...an incredible experience! My original intent was to have WLS locally. I did 5 out of 6 months of jumping thru hoops for insurance company..all the tests etc. Then found out that there was NO chance that it would be covered..and if I chose self pay for my surgeon here it would have been 30 K for surgery and 1 night in the hospital...UMMMMMMMM (oh and he has only done 3 VSG's)

SO i started my investigation. You are in the right place for both info, and support! You will be amazed at the quality of service and attention you will get from Dr. A and Dr. Campos. They were in my room at least 4-5x a day EACH! Dr. C found out that my honey loved starbucks...so he actually would pick up a coffee for him on his way to work in the am! Can you imagine that happeing in the US? HAHAHAH

You are making a great decision..one that will affect you for the rest of your life! I'm down 31 lbs and on the road to a much happier and healthier me!

Feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Happy New year

Kris

deedee & Linda, thanks for your replies & more so your kind words! I see that you are both so close to your goal weights... huge congrats! It's truly inspiring & gives me something to really look forward to!

Kris, thanks for giving some insight into your experience with Dr Aceves. I'm looking forward to starting this journey & am pretty relieved with all the good feedback everyone has on him. I too looked into US hospitals, but when I read the level of service from him & his team, I was quickly sold. I'm not discrediting any US hospitals and/or surgeons, but when I'm traveling so far & paying out of my pocket I really wanted to go somewhere that more than a few people had rave reviews about! All the best in your continued weight loss, sounds like you're well on your way!

I am right with you Kai. Never did I think I would EVER have surgery in Mexico. I am also a research guru and never found anything negative on Dr. Aceves. I was sleeved just 2 weeks ago by Dr. Aceves on 12/19/09 and I am doing great! My mom came with me and she was quite bitter about it (being Mexico and all). By the end of our time, I think she is not Dr. Aceves' biggest cheerleader! I should have her post a testimonial! You have NOTHING to fear. The only NEGATIVE thing my mom had to say was...they didn't have a bath tub. She likes her baths in the morning and they only have showers. Ha! Good luck to you!!

Thanks Kim! Sounds like you are doing well, which is just as good as hearing about your experience there!

Did your mom stay in the room with you? I've read about a sofa in the room, is it a sofa bed or just sofa? My husband will be coming with me, and he is super supportive & caring, but can be a bit of a baby... so here's hoping he sucks it up as much as I have to! lol

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
