Complications

Recommended Posts

It's so wonderful to hear of all the wonderful success stories. I'm considering VSG but have not heard of any complications yet. I know there must be some possible complications. Can anyone fill me in on what they might be or what you have personally experienced?

Hi Bonnie-

Welcome to VST and the boards!!!

I'll be 10 months out on the 9th- and I have to tell you- being where I am now the little bit of trouble I had in the beginning is just a thing of the past!

My surgery went just fine- but I was one of the few that had aterrible time with vomiting and nausea right after surgery- I ws hospitilze for 5 days due to it.

But it seems most here are home in 2-3 days.

My Nausea continued to my 3rd month or so. If I ate too much or to fast I would vomit as well. And it still happens- but I think its a good thing to remind me how to eat!

Other than that- no problems!! I'm down 158 pounds to date- No way this could have happened without the sleeve!

I LOVE my sleeve and the new life it gave me!

Good luck to you in your decision! Keep us posted

I personally did not have any! But it seems that most complications are gastric leak (which is suppose to be pretty rare). Im not sure of the stats--im sure someone on here knows. Stricture - or narrowing of a part of the stomach can happen-leading to vomiting, etc. I hear a stricture is uncomfortable but easy to fix. Other than that most of the risk of VSG are associated with any surgery in general: blood clot, pneumonia, infection, etc.

However. Ive been research it for about a year now (been sleeved 2.5 months) and I have have only spoke with 5-6 people that have had any of the above complications. It is important to know the risks, so that you can be prepared.

However, having VSG was one of the best decisions that Ive made! Good Luck!

You can do a search for "complications" and it will bring up several posts where members have posted about their post-surgery issues. Also there is a forum VSG Complications Support Group that you can check out.

The only complication I had following surgery was esophogeal spasms; however, as Dr. Aceves indicated, I am now almost 6 months out and they are dissipating - I only have a problem now if I drink something really cold when trying to take medication.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
