My surgeon says we can drink right up until we eat. I did a little reading on it and haven't found anything to contradict him.

But we are also told to wait 45 min. after because the stomach doesn't empty very much in the first 20-30 minutes. I find that if i don't wait at least 30 min. but preferably 45 - 60, that I do get hungry again sooner. That wasn't true in the beginning when I wasn't very hungry at all, but it became true the farther out I got.

I was never told we had to stop drinking 30 min before eating. I drink right up until I eat but I do wait an hour after I eat.

It will get better. Just keep sipping away.

I'm going to start eating a couple of prunes every day and see if that helps. It is so uncomfortable! Yesterday was a killer. the only good that comes out of it  is a couple of pounds down the drain!

A suggestion re the prunes. Stew them in some Water first for aobut 1/2 hr or more, then they will be soft and easy to eat, and the juice they are cooked in is very helpful, so drink it too.

I plan on eating a few tbsp of tasty hemp hearts each day as they keep me very regular now. (I mix ithem in my oatmeal) They are full of Protein, Vitamins and essential fats and so very good for you. Also have you considered getting those little melting suppositories? Used them after my other surgeries, helps a lot!

Do your health food stores carry Hemp hearts? they likely can be ordered online, try googling for them. Just don't get the hemp seeds, you want just what is inside the seeds, the hearts.

anyway, good luck - I know I will also be doing this pretty soon now!

I really need some help with drinking Water. I carry around a bottle with me all day, and I feel like i am sipping constantly, but I cannot even get to 32 oz a day. I am now 1 month out and feeling the dehydration badly. I don't know what to do. especially now that i am eating real food and can't drink for 1/2 before and after i eat, it is becoming harder to get in the Water. . . ideas?

SF popsicles and sucking on ice cubes helps alot - also, as has been said, it doesn't have to be 64 oz. of water - water is better for you - but getting in Fluid of any kind is better than not getting in 64 oz of anything.

My doctor told me that the amount of Water you need is the difference between all other fluids you consume including Protein Shakes. I am on 4 8.5 ounce Protein shakes per day. This leaves 30 ounces of other fluids. Water consists of anything that started out as water but does not contain caffeine (i.e., cool-aid, crystal light, Decaf tea, etc).

What in the heck are hemp hearts?

Google it - wealth of information

HEMP HEARTS? are the Most Concentrated and Best Balanced Source of Proteins, Essential Fats and Vitamins in Nature. Of equal importance, these desirable nutrients are not accompanied in Hemp Hearts with an excess of carbohydrates, sugars, and saturated fats--nutrients which are already eaten in excess and which in the long term have proven to be challenging to human health.

They sometimes do, but be prepared for a 40-50% markup. Check prices online first. I order them a case of 9, 1 lb cartons at a time, and it works out to $10 ea and that includes courier cost to my door.

But then again - those ones come from the next province over in Alberta, thru Rocky Mountain Grain products. I would even phone and ask them their price to your address. 1 403 329 1380. Usually less than shown online even!

They are truly good tasting and can be eaten with a spoon or mixed in yogurt, hot Cereal (my fav) or just about anything. They are tiny so we should be able to eat them with the mushy stage. I think. I have only 3 Tbsps a day and find that is sufficient. (12 gms Protein. They recommend 5 Tbsps for 20 grams Protein, but at around 300 calories). I stick with the smaller amount as I also mix in 1/3 cup blueberries with my oatmeal. Very filling that way.

After I am sleeved on Monday will likely end up with only a few spoonfuls of oatmeal and my hemp hearts. -if that.

Hope that helps.

Donna

Heck of a good deal!

Try it out ladies, just give them a call!

Hi Donna,

Thanks for all of the info. How long does that case last? I could probably figure it out, but figured it would just be easier (and quicker) to ask :biggrin0:

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
