I had a band placed and hate it. What is the cost for a revision? I am selfpay.

Before considering revision maybe we can help you with your band.

How long have you had it? Any fills? Any restriction? Why do you hate it? What is going on?

I'm in the same boat, Stuck. Self pay lapband patient, and asked my doctor when I first got the band how much he would charge to revise, he was annoyed, wanted me to stick with the band, its horrible, I hate it. Monty Swartz in Tucson, my doc, said he can do a revision for mid $30's, OMG, thats outrageous, I think the cost is similar in Phoenix, called around a bit. Austin Bariatric Center in TX is $11-$12k, but thats just the sleeve, not revision, they don't take the band out or have anything to do with the band, that may have changed. Theres another place in El Paso I think that is similar price. Scary though, I saw a post on here of a lady who had leakage and had to go back in for emergency surgery in TX, wow, what if that happens in Mexico (thats where I'm considering). I asked my doc to just take the band out w/o revision out and he won't strongly advises against for a revisions, says its much less invasive to do both at once, which makes sense, but depending on cost and other issues, I may still try to have him remove. Anyone know costs elsewhere? Mexico? How safe is that? What about the possibility of leakage? How long do you have to stay?

Wow, $30K for a revision? That's horrible.

Earlier you were asking about Aceves, I do not know what his revision cost is because they have all these promotions going on now. Call Nina and ask her. If you want the number I can PM you with it.

One thing I would suggest is that if you are still considering Aceves he is driving distance from you. You are in Tucson? He's about 3.5 hours from you so go down there for a consult. Check it out and see if you are comfortable with it. Make a day trip out of it, leave in the AM return in the afternoon.

Revisions cost more than a straight sleeve but if you get the band out under insurance then couldn't you save a few bucks that way? Even if your ins does not cover WLS they may cover band removal. Your doc agrees with my doc that if the revision can be done in the same surgery that is best, it's less OR time, one surgery vs. two, etc. But that is something for you to consider anyway.

My doc told me that leak risks are triple with a revision from band to sleeve so it really is important for you to go to a revision surgeon regardless of which country you choose.

For leaks... I don't know how other doctors do it but Aceves does three leak tests. If you have a leak happen later you can go to any surgeon in the US. It's the band surgeons that won't take care of other doctors banded patients. There is also insurance you can buy just for that. Let's say you go to someone in Mexico or the US and come home and have complications there is an insurance policy you can buy that covers those costs.

seriously wasabubble, you are so wonderful to do this support site for people, share your time and experience. Thank you so much!! Wow, 3x more likely for a leak with revision, scary. Any suggestions? Adhere strictly to the diet: softs and liquids for the first 2 months? Did you have any leakage? When did you get your revision? What is it like now, can you eat without discomfort? Extremely small quanities? I sincerely do appreciate your time!!! I will call MX this am, I have been seriously considering for some time, just think I'm at the end of struggle now.

The only insurance I know about for this is BLIS and your surgeon has to be in their program.

You think 30k for a revision is bad? There are surgeons who charge that for a virgin surgery! The top sleeve surgeons in the US all charge under $20k so my feeling is, don't pay more than that.

Hi, I was wondering what you ended up doing? I'm in Tucson also, and have a band, for almost 5 yrs now, I weigh almost what I did the day of my surgery! I am now wanting a sleeve. Looking at getting it here in town, but I'm self pay, so considering Mexico. Thanks, Anne

Hi Anne... I am in Tucson also. Considering revision. I was quoted 21,000 for revision surgery here. I really like my Dr... but if I do decide on a revision, will most likely go with Dr Aceves in MX. I just had an upper GI done on the 31st to test for a slip. Those results will help make my decision. My Dr is really pushing for a fix, but I am pretty closed to that at this point. PM me if you would like to chat more!

Like a few others here I went with a VGS using a self pay facility. I went to the Jerusalem hospital in Tijuana MX. http://www.medicaltourismco.com/mexico-hospitals/hospital-jerusalem-tijuana-mx.php The cost was $5000 out of pocket, perhaps the revision with the removal of the lap band might be more.

I understand that some are not comfortable going this route, but it has worked out well for me and many others.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
