Almost two weeks postop, gaining weight?

Recommended Posts

I'll be two weeks post op on Tuesday and for there past couple days I've noticed my appetite has increased significantly, as well as the amount of food I'm able to consume. At first I was losing weight consistently, but for the past several days I haven't lost anything and have actually gained. I obviously haven't had a fill yet, I'm scheduled for the 21st, but I'm so worried right now about a band slip! When I had my post op appointment last week, my surgeon told me I could eat pretty much what I wanted except red meat, but I've still been pretty conservative about what I've eaten.

Did anyone else feel like they could eat anything a couple weeks after surgery?

I was just like that apart from I couldn't eat bread. Still can't. You are able to eat more because your healing and swelling etc is going down. Don't panic try to make healthy choices.. Its a slow process but you'll get there

Yes yes...after I was mostly healed, but before my first fill, I could eat anything and everything. Some call it the " bandster hell". Hang in there and try to make healthy choices as much as you can. It will get easier after you get some restriction in your band, which will cause you to stay fuller longer after consuming less food.< /p>

try to focus on changing your habits. The band will help but you can't rely on it to do all the work. Increased appetite and weight fluctuation are normal but just because you can eat anything doesn't mean you should.

I can relate to your experience! I just had surgery Aug 19 and just a few days after it, I was eating everything! I was constantly hungry and confused, wondering what had gone wrong..... I had no restriction!!!! I finally went in for my first filling and after telling my experience to the dr he explain to me that the reason why I had no restriction was because I was a smaller person (my bmi is only 35 weighing 175) and needed a filling to have some restriction! He was right, I only got 2cc but (which was a piece of cake) I feel good!!!! Now, I understand that in fact everybody experiences are different!!!! Ultimately, we need to hang in there and not give up too quick!!!! Unlike other journeys, mine is going to be a slow one but I am hopeful, believing that I will finish strong!!!! Best wishes to you : )!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you guys so much for the reassurance. I pretty much had myself convinced that I'd slipped the band. I've been making healthy choices with the foods I have eaten, trying to really watch carbs because that seems to work well for me. I knew about "bandster hell" but I guess I was just still high on the major pre and immediate post op weight loss I'd had that I didn't even take that into consideration.

Thanks again for the replies, I'm so glad that I have this forum and all of you!

It's normal for you to be able to eat anything- in fact it's preferred so that you can be assured of being able to eat all the healthy foods you need. Some people do have "problem foods" once they have adequate Fluid in their band but those foods should always be the minority.

Remember, the band isn't meant to physically stop you from eating anything. That will always be your job and why it's so important to make good choices and stick to band sized portions. The band is their to control your hunger.

Best wishes.

Almost every one of us went through this period called "Bandster Hell". Your band is usually not filled or filled with just a few CC's at time of surgery. This means your stoma(opening between pouch and stomach) is pretty much wide open. food will pass through quite easily and won't give you the satiety needed to avoid hunger. It may take several fills for you to start to feel restriction/satiety. It looks like your doctor is leaning towards fluoroscopy for your fills and that's a good thing.

Most of the weight we lose right after surgery is only Water weight. Some may be fat but not much. You probably won't start shedding fat lbs till you begin an exercise program and find enough restriction for the band to do it's magic. Highly unlikely that your band has slipped unless you had a serious hurling/vomiting session or you ate a 16 oz porterhouse?

You're normal so far so that's a good thing!

So so true. In the beginning you lose because you are on such a restricted diet. Then you add solids back in it easy to sock on a little bit of weight. Bandster Hell is a very real thing and I not only struggled with it I also went through months of finding that perfect sweet spot where the band was adjusted just right for me.

Focus on the quality of food right now and as you get fills you can adjust your portions. My Wife is a few weeks post op (banded 9/16) and she is going through the same exact things that you are. She has no fill in that band. While is perfectly normal it can also be frustrating. Stick with it though because it is worth it. Remember the hard part is over. You did it. Now just follow through and work it and you'll be golden.

Best wishes!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
