Oh no! Food Stage Confusion!

OK. Sooo on Wednesday I got cleared to eat my pureed food. MY DOCTOR includes the following as OK to eat.

Starch Group

· Hot cereals – oatmeal, cream of wheat, and grits

Fruits

· Canned fruits in their own juice or extra light Syrup

· pureed banana

· Unsweetened applesauce

Vegetables

· Cook the vegetables well and then blenderize

Protein Sources

· Well cooked meat, chicken, turkey – blenderize with broth to get smooth consistency

· Greek yogurt- non fat plain (flavor yourself)

· Beans (kidney, pinto, black, etc.) – cook well and blenderize

· Low-fat refried Beans (no need to blenderize)

· Low-fat cottage cheese – blenderize

· sugar-free puddings

· Low-fat cream Soups – blenderize to a smooth liquid consistency (NO chunks)

OK, now here is my soft food list not to start until 2 more weeks.

Starches

· Mashed potatoes

o Add unflavored Protein powder to “beef” up

· pudding

· Baked or sweet potatoes

· oatmeal (Weight Control Variety has most protein)

Protein Sources

· Finely Ground tuna (possibly as tuna salad with low-fat mayo or a red-wine vinaigrette)

· chicken or Egg salad (with low-fat mayo)

· Shrimp (start with salad shrimp – the smaller, the more tolerable) and Scallops

· Whitefish, Haddock, Cod, and Mahi Mahi (make sure to keep moist by not overcooking)

· Fat-Free Refried Beans (mashed really well)

· Other Bean Varieties (mashed really well)

· Greek Yogurt (non fat plain)

· Cottage cheese – sprinkle with Splenda and cinnamon for a new taste!

· Ricotta Cheese – layer with meat spaghetti sauce for a “pastaless” lasagna!

· Hard Boiled eggs

· Shredded Cheese – spread over beans for a new zest!

Fruits and Vegetables

· Vegetables that are well-cooked, but not pureed (try to avoid stringy veggies)

· Fruits packed in their own juice or extra light syrup (Del Monte Carb Clever is lowest in sugar)

· Low-Fat Salsa – use to flavor beans and other meat

now my question for the experienced bandster is this. If I can eat things like refried beans on my pureed diet why not mashed potatoes, some consistency if not thicker!

Well at any rate I used my logic ( which is not good logic apparently ) before looking at the soft food list and ate mashed potatoes as well as mac and cheese (the really aldente kind) yesterday and today with ZERO problems. What do you guys think? No more or what? Do you think I did damage in those 2 days?

I doubt you hurt anything and I don't understand why refried Beans are OK and mashed potatoes aren't either? As far as consuming potatoes and mac and cheese, both may be OK right now but once you heal they aren't a good food choice. Neither has a lot of nutrients and if you fill up on Protein foods you may not want them anyway?

It's also possible that your doctor is trying to steer you towards more Protein rich foods over processed foods or potatoes. There are so many more protein choices in two weeks vs. now.

Oh I definitively agree there are lots of healthy things I want right now but just cant have :'( in 3 weeks when I am on solid food I plan on not going back to mashed potatoes / mac & chees / Soup. I am CRAVING some grilled zucchini, squash and steak! Soft foods just annoy me lol.

my doctor did not give me those options. my liquid diet was hard. two weeks of pure chicken broth and Protein Shakes. mashed potatoes are on the list of foods not to eat. it goes through the band,

I am off the liquid diet. I am day 16 now. I was on the liquid diet for 12 days

Just say no to Mac and cheese!!! Uber high fat/cals/carbs; and no Protein.

Right now thats WHY i am eating it. I have to eat these things just to reach my 1000 calorie mark. Once I can eat more complex foods I wont be eating it anymore.

You trusted your doctor to cut you open and do your surgery, so trust in his advice for your post op diet too. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of his plan or if you like it, all that matters is that you follow it.

Stick to the plan exactly (macaroni and cheese isn't on it and nor are mashed potatoes yet). It's not worth risking damage to your stomach or your band.

Don't forget those two things are very starchy foods & will make u full but remember about sliders wich I think they are cause they go down quickly but they also stay in the pouch (stomache) longer and are harder to get rid of , where as Beans fill you but they will come out and they also have Protein from my understanding, but ask ur Doc for the pre op & post op instructions so this will help u to start , and discuss it with ur doc they will know why, that's why I like my Band surgeon cause at any time I can text or call him and he will reply , cause I had a few things happen that I though wasn't normal and got scared but he told e it was normal and for e to come in just to make sure for my concern, he is great even with stuff I heard and read aout him I also asked him about it and he was blunt and trueful so that's why I chose him,

I wish I could help but my doctor did not follow such a strict regime for me post op, I was allowed any foods I could tolerate after 1 weeks, I had one week of liquids than progressed to solids. As for hitting 1000 calories, it took me weeks before I was able to eat enough food to reach 100 calories. I hovered at the 700-800 calorie range for about a month. As for the mashed potato's and starches, I did eat these a lot in the beginning because the went down easy and yes I know they were sliders. I added unflavored Protein to my mashed potato's, oatmeal, Soups and star bucks. Follow your doctor as close as you can, and if you really have questions about why their diet is confusing ask the nutritionist, every doctor has their own way of doing things and on this forum you will see a wide range of ideas and opinion. My philosophy is you do what works for you and as long as you are losing weight and adopting a healthier life style all is good. Good luck to you in your journey.

Isn't it weird that each doctor has a different post op procedure. Last time I checked we all had the same surgery.... maybe I got the lapband that require 6 weeks before eating normal food while the other person got the lapband that requires 2 weeks....... NAH... thats sounds a little crazy right?

As I was reading this I felt as if you were scolding me. Not sure if that was your intention or not. . .

Monday when my office calls I will be calling my nutritionist to see if what I ate will cause any damage. As for following the diet, I do not blindly follow anything given to me, I ask lots of questions, if I didnt then I would not be who I am as a person. If something doesnt make sense i'm going to call it out. There is obviously no one way to eat after post op. Thats why I wanted everyone else opinions. Anyway I will have answers on Monday ( as long as my office actually returns my calls )

NAH... thats sounds a little crazy right?

Mine was even stricter than yours ;)

It was 8 weeks before I was back on normal foods. I had 2 weeks of Clear Liquids, 2 weeks of full liquids, 2 weeks of mushy food, and 2 weeks of soft food.

As for following the diet, I do not blindly follow anything given to me, I ask lots of questions, if I didnt then I would not be who I am as a person. If something doesnt make sense i'm going to call it out. There is obviously no one way to eat after post op. Thats why I wanted everyone else opinions. Anyway I will have answers on Monday ( as long as my office actually returns my calls )

I was speaking the truth, nothing more and nothing less. I don't coddle anyone- ever. I simply state the facts regardless if the facts are liked or not.

I wish my surgeon was like that! But then again, he would be tired of my calls lol. I have seen my surgeon 2 times once before surgery and the day of surgery, Sadly the number of bariatric doctors around here are veryyyy few. I gotta take what I can get I guess. All of my post of appointments are with assistants in the office. Each time with a different assistant. Count your blessings, your lucky to have such an involved doc!

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
