Alcohol after banding

Recommended Posts

Seven weeks until my surgery...so may questions.

I enjoy a glass of wine occasionally, say 1 or 2 glasses a month. Is drinking alcohol any different post banding?

I posted on another thread about this... but I still have a glass of wine a once or twice a week, usually. I don't have many vices so a nice Chardonnay is a nice perk for me to have when I can. So I was so worried that if I had an RnY that I'd never be able to have a bit of wine now and again. (Of course later, I find out many of my friends with RnY bypasses can still drink, but being as a single who goes out, I was concerned.)

I told my surgeon before I was banded and he thought it was fine. So I just try to compensate for the carbs elsewhere - Works for me!

Happy Band Journeys to all...

Hello, I find my tolerance is really low (and it was pretty low to start with) with the band although I enjoy an occassional glass of wine with no probs. Had a huge bad episode with an irish coffee (probably from having it too soon after a PB) which was DUMB but I'm still a newbie and learning mostly thru hard knocks. Had a margarita (sip or two) and just found i didn't like it or want it and didn't even come close to finishing it. It's also somewhat of a challenge when following the no drinking with or after meals 'rule'. Alcohol is also an irritant to the stomach so I don't like to do to much of it and it definitely slows/stops weight loss for the week!

I am a wine/martini/margarita drinker. The first couple of months after surgery, some did not taste so great - like the margaritas. But now 6 months after surgery, alcohol is not a problem at all. As a matter of fact, red wine has been my saving grace when I could not eat - it relaxes me enough to be able to try the food again. For me, it seems to have the same effect as warm drinks on the band. It also helped when I could not get my calorie count up high enough to reach the 1200 to be able to lose. I find that it takes much less quantity to be able to reach the same buzz - where as before surgery, I had a high tolerance.

Once you're finished with the post operative healing period I would think you could enjoy those glasses of wine as you did before. BUT remember that they are loaded with extra calories and be prepared to work them into your caloric intake for the day.

Your absorption of the alcohol or the calories hasn't changed at all.

It is sooooo much better once you have been banded. The effect are almost instant.Great.I have never been a big drinker but I do like to have one or two which now feels like 4 or 5 .I take loads of ice if Iam out because with an empty stomach you get tipsy really quick. So enjoy and watch the consumption as you could find you stop losing if you have too often.Enjoy

Well, I am going drinking tonight as a matter of fact!! :kiss But like everyone else has said....there are lots of empty calories and you have to be careful of how much you drink. I have found that Martinis and Bloody Mary's are what I drink the best. I don't drink anything with fruit juice or soda. Actually....it might sound stupid but I sometimes feel a little better knowing that I am getting my veggies with a Bloody Mary even if it is laced with Vodka!!! :heh: Is that bad??? :paranoid Anywho! That is my take on drinking with the band. I also don't feel bad about doing it because that is the only day of the week that I drink, TGIF!! :clap2:  :whoo: :) Plus, the bar that I go to has free, fresh popcorn so I don't have an empty stomach all night!!! And then that is really the only time I eat popcorn too! So...everyone is different....but I see no harm. Take care!

Thanks to all of you who have replied. There are so many life changes that I will be facing, it is so nice to know that I don't have to give up a bit of an indulgence. I realize that I do have to consider the calories, but since I have a glass so rarely at least I have hope that I dont' have to give up my treat! Thanks and blessings to all of you!!!!!

I have found that my tolerance is a bit lowered, but I can drink alcohol without a problem. I drink a glass of wine or a beer about 3 times a week, but I usually don't even finish it!

I am new to the banding, and I was wondering the same thing about alcohol. I like a couple shots of tequila, no mixture, has anyone tried straight alcohol. Does it hurt the stomach?

So some people do drink beer? I was kind of depressed about the thought of never drinking a beer again. You'd think not drinking pepsi would be more upsetting! hahaha. :faint:

Yes, some do. But shouldn't (according to my doc). Doctors seem to have different ideas and advise their patients in different ways though. I am just staying on the safe side and avoiding all carbonation like the plague.

when I had my Lap put In I shared a room with a lovely lady that had been banded 2 years ago, she had started drinking pepsi once or twice a week, and though if it didnt cause her a problem , no worries.

well she started getting ulsers and Dr took her in to see and her pouch had streched and laped over the band. almost 3 times the size it should have been.

Moral of the story, just because it doesnt bother you does not mean its not hurting you.

No bubbles!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
