Hair Loss Question

Recommended Posts

I'm 30 pounds down in 3 months, and happy with my band.

Just as many others have esperienced, I am losing A LOT of hair. My drain is clogged and I'm collecting gobs of hair on a daily basis. The same thing happend after I gave birth to each of my 3 children (all about 3 months after delivery). I didn't do anything but wait, and eventually the hair grew back. It looked terrible when it was falling out and even stranger when it was growing back (it stuck up all over the place).

Here's my question. Has anyone NOT taken Biotin, or NOT done anything else, except wait, and found that the post-band hairloss stopped and then your hair grew back on it's own? If so, how long did it take?

I'm asking because I HATE to swallow pills and I struggle enough with the ones I absolutely have to take. BTW, I am consuming plenty of food and plenty of Protein (1200 calories a day and 80+ grams of protein).

Thanks for reading and advising.

Every time I go through anesthetic, I get thinning hair and Hair loss. In the past I didn't take or do anything and it took close to 6 months for my hair to finally grow back and go back to normal.

I had surgery a month ago (not Lap Band) and am once again having the this issue. This time, I started taking high doses of Biotin and bought a Shampoo to use twice a week to essentially leach the chemicals out of my hair. After only 3 weeks, the hair loss has slowed considerably and I'm starting to see a difference.

Because I have been on this forum 7 months before my surgery I read everything including hair loss. What I did to get a big head start I started taking Biotin around January of this year, as a precaution. Its a small dose and I haven't noticed any Hair loss since. I continue to take the Biotin pill (can't hurt) its good for hair, skin, and nails. I have straight stringy hair to begin with. Yes, I shed but I always have. More in the summer.

I also heard that hormones and age play a big part in hair thinning as well. So, I am pretty much screwed cause I am old and got messed up hormones, LOL.

It took about a year for my hair to get back to its pre-surgery state, but it does go back.

I take a supplement (with biotin) for hair, skin, and nails. It's huge, but I crush it with my other Vitamins into yogurt. I'm 18 months banded, and my Hair loss has been in spurts but very significant. Luckily, I had thick hair to begin with. It still shocks me how much hair I lose, but it is growing back and I just keep it layered. It's what I consider my worst side effect of the surgery (and isn't really all that awful).

But what size biotin tablet do you take? I have one bottle that I was taking presurgery that was a little smaller around than a pencil eraser but about 1/2 inch long. I am afraid to take it because I am afraid it will get stuck. It is kind of mushy so it cannot be cut. I just bought some tablets last night that can be cut in half but I am still afraid of it getting stuck. DO they have chewables or liquids>

I had this discussion with my surgeon at my last appointment...my situation was a bit obfuscated by the fact that 1) I have had prior surgeries without experiencing any hair loss, 2) in addition to the band surgery in February I had my gall bladder removed 3 weeks ago, 3) I did not experience any Hair loss until about 4 months post op, 4) I just found out another medical diagnosis I have which may cause hair loss.

Difficult situation to sort through, however my surgeon that no matter the reason, the hair should stop falling out by the 9th month...and none of the conditions I have will result in permanent hair loss.

I also take Biotin, however my surgeon did not feel that my hair loss was related to any Vitamin deficiency or lack of Protein.

I have experienced Hair loss starting about month three. I started taking a 5000 Biotin supplement before surgery and do not know if it has helped or not. The pill itself is very small and squishy.

My hair has always been thick, so It's hard to see any places of loss but I see it in the brush each morning.

liquid softgels -- very tiny and super super easy to swallow, they just slide down. I took a picture for you. I take 2500 mcg.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies and the picture! The picture was helfpul.

So, what I hear you saing is that the hair does grow back and the Biotin may or may not help, but it's likely that it helps it stop falling out sooner and start growing back sooner. Bottom line, it's a matter of speed, with the same end result. The hair does come back. That's great news! And yes, I agree that if this is the worst side effect of the band, it's totally worth it! So far, for me, the Hair loss and a little bit of residual port pain is all I have to say as far as negatives. The rest has been WONDERFUL!! Just today I put on jeans and crossed my legs! A first in a long time for both, and it felt very rewarding.

hair loss equals not enough protein!!!!

That is not always true, although more common than not. I get at least the minimum Protein required by my nutritionist and have experienced Hair loss.< /p>

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
