Lap Banders Only Lose 55% Of Their Excess Weight??

Recommended Posts

Please don't let people discourage you. Statistics are statistics- doesnt mean that will be you.

For what it's worth, Gastric Bypass patients tend to lost 65% of excess weight vs. the 55% of Lap Band patients. So 10% more weight lost ("statistically") but SO much more complications!

Please don't let your NP, or random strangers in the waiting room talk you out of something you have decided to do

Your results will be up to you. You have to get honest with yourself and make sure you are willing to change your life, eating & exercise habits. I was banded 9/7/11. So far I have lost approx 80% of my excess weight. 9 lbs left to normal BMI. 25 lbs to goal.

I have been fortunate to be healthy & have a great experience. But, I have also followed my drs rules 97% of the time. I use my fitness pal & track my food, cal, pro, carb, fat, etc. I am accountable to my friends on there. I have told almost no one in my life.

I did it for me and will continue to do so. One day at a time. It's not always easy but it is worth it and it can work if you work it. Good luck in your journey!

I am part of a WLS family - hubby, MIL and I have the band, FIL had gastric bypass. We all did it within 6 months of each other in 2010.

I can tell you that in the beginning the weight will fly off with just limited portion sizes and by adjusting the band. Then you have to figure out to eat better food, and exercise. My MIL lost about 50 lbs but honestly is lazy about it and not tracking what she is eating in any way, and not really exercising. She floats in a pool like once a week. She lost 50 lbs and that is a great result considering the effort she puts in. She not psychologivally willing to adjust the band as tight as she should because she is not ready to let go of eating larger amounts. So anyone looking at her 2 years out will say she is not successful, as she has about 80 lbs excess weight. But she is not putting in effort.

My husband is the same way except he has adjusted his band as much as possible and he is not willing to change his eating habits or exercise. He lost 120 lbs and has about 80 to go.

I had 95 lbs to lose, have lost 76.5. I watch what I eat 80% of the time. I don't track what I eat, I just make good choices most of the time. I work out 4-6 days a week for 45 min or an hour at a shot. I am very pleased with my weight loss. I know it's not coming back. I can maintain it. I have a metabolic disorder and I feel I am beating it now.

My FIL lost 140 lbs with bypass in 6 months, he is at goal. Had horrible complications for life that can't be addressed. Seeing him go through that constantly reaffirms my decision to get the band.

So if they say lapband only loses 55% of excess weight, it's not that they can't get to goal, it's usually "won't". People are more in control, which often leads to people doin what they want...

Yeah' date=' so I'm sitting in the waiting room, and this lady comes up to me and starts telling me not to get a lapband and it's awful blah blah blah... and then I say that if people really try they'll lose more weight. And they say no... blah blah blah... I don't even want to hear it! I was all happy about getting the band. Now they have put fear in me. I've lost 7 pounds in 7 days on my own cuz I have to lose 25-30 pounds before surgery. If I could lose all my weight at age 14 ON MY OWN with diet and excercise, how much more can I lose it with this tool? Why do they say such things? I am so motivated! I WILL DO IT!!!! Screw them and their opinions. I WILL LOSE MY WEIGHT!

It's all up to you and how motivated u are. I'm 6 months post-op and I'm down 83 lbs with no fill and I'm keeping up with a friend who got gastric a week before me. I think I'm at about 60% of my excess weight lost

Don't listen to negative talk. there will always be someone who disagrees. In the end you are doing this for you!

Best of luck to you. And try myfitnesspal I lost 20 lb pre-op using this app

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
