Surgery Tomorrow!! What To Bring?

Recommended Posts

It's finally here! I lucked out and got the first surgery tomorrow morning, I have to be there at 7am. So excited!!! I'm running around in a panic right now trying to get everything ready. I've got my comfy clothes, my water bottle, and a pillow and blanket for the drive home. Still feels like I'm forgetting something...

Is there anything you brought to your surgery that helped? Or anything you wish you would have brought?

First, best of luck to you tomorrow.

Ok, leave the pillow and blanket in the car, along with the Water bottle. They'll give you Water post op when you're able to drink it.

If the hospital needs your ID & insurance cards, bring those. Remove all jewelry and don't bring any valuables.

Flip flops are nice because you can easily slip them on & walk around for a bit post op, if you're able to, as well as wearing easy-to-put-on clothing.

Honestly, I didn't have time to do anything post-op still in the hospital. I had it done as an outpatient. I came in two hours before surgery and was kept busy with the nurse and anesthesiologist. After surgery, I was so sleepy, I could barely focus on drinking what the nurse gave me. I went home about 4 hours after surgery and slept on the couch. I didn't need anything at all besides the comfy clothes I wore (recommend a sports bra and comfy clothes - I couldn't have focused enough to snap my bra hooks!!) and sandals.

You'll be so out of it, you won't use half the stuff you bring. Lol. I stayed overnight and was sleeping most of the time. Bring Chapstick, underwear, flip flops, sweatpants and a baggy tshirt.

Thanks everyone for the tips! I hadn't thought about chapstick, I will definitely pack some of that. I only live like 20 minutes away from the hospital I'm probably being dramatic... oh well. Off to bed now, bandland tomorrow!!

I brought a small travel pillow into the hospital with me, it really helped to hold it against my stomach while walking before they would discharge me.

Don't mean to hijack your thread but I'm really surprised at the number of people that had a one night stay for their surgery. I was in at 0700 & home my 1330.

May I ask why so many of you had overnight stays?

For me, I had to stay overnight because once the nurse gave me pain meds orally I was extremely sick and couldn't even eat a popsicle without vomiting... So they wanted me to stay until I could hold down some liquid.... Trust me, I wanted to go home so bad the night of surgery but it definitely was worth me staying overnight!

Some insurances require it (I believe Medicare requires an 23 hour observation stay). Luckily mine didn't, I was at the hospital around 11, surgery at 1, home by 5...and I was in surgery until 2:30.

My surgeon required the one night stay, I can't complain, I was so tired that day between the surgery & all the morphine.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
