Do Not Want Protein Shakes

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I was banded last Thursday. I drank the shakes two weeks prior or surgery and will drink them two weeks after. I do not like them. They do not feel natural to me. There are ingredients in them that you can't pronounce. I plan to follow the principles of the p10 diet eating plan as soon as I can. Just real food, no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

My question for those of you months out....does anyone feel they get all the Protein they need in without the shakes? It seems like even at all my nutritional counseling classes they focused a lot on shakes, shakes, shakes?

Also...how long did it take for your steri strips to fall off? Five days out and mine don't look like they are budging?

And I still feel like I need to take the pain meds? I tried not yesterday and just felt like someone punched me in the gut. If all I had to do was lay around that would be fine, but I have a house, two kids, and two dogs to take care of. Today I took them this morning and have been productive? Is this normal?

Thanks!

Laura

At the clinic I go to they want me to reach my Protein goals without shakes by using food. It takes some getting used to but is possible.

I did not need to take pain meds. for more than a couple of days but everyone is different.

Good luck on your journey.

Well. I drank a total of 2 in the past 2 years. Hate them.

Yes, I absolutely get all of my protien from chewable food.(I track it)

My Dr. doesn't want me to get any calories, at all, from liquid (beverages).

It's worked for me!

Good Luck!

There are ingredients in them that you can't pronounce. I plan to follow the principles of the p10 diet eating plan as soon as I can. Just real food, no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

My question for those of you months out....does anyone feel they get all the Protein they need in without the shakes? YES It seems like even at all my nutritional counseling classes they focused a lot on shakes, shakes, shakes? Even for post-ops? Was it a mixed patient group - all kinds of surgeries? I've heard of post-op RNY and DS patients needing Protein supplements, but that shouldn't be the case with band patients.

Also...how long did it take for your steri strips to fall off? Five days out and mine don't look like they are budging? Don't touch them until your surgeon says it's OK. If they're itching or causing you pain, call your surgeon to ask if you can gently pull them off.

And I still feel like I need to take the pain meds? I tried not yesterday and just felt like someone punched me in the gut. If all I had to do was lay around that would be fine, but I have a house, two kids, and two dogs to take care of. Today I took them this morning and have been productive? Is this normal? Everybody's tolerance for pain is different. It's really too soon for you to be trying to be as productive as usual. Do you not have anyone who can help you with the house, kids, and dogs? Simple housework that you ordinarily take for granted can put a lot of stress on your healing abdominal muscles. Pulling wet clothes out of the washing machine, pushing around a vacuum cleaner, making a bed, lifting kids/dogs...you need to take it easy.

Thanks!

Laura

I never had Protein Shakes post op because they were all disgusting to me. I get 60-70 grams a day without it by eating high Protein food, like Beans, eggs whites and chicken. Don't put something in your body you don't feel comfortable with, when there are so many other options out there

Im also a disliker of Protein shakes. Even in my 4mirror wks poast op almost 3 yrs ago, when I was sposed to drink 3 a day, I could barely gag down 8 oz in a day. Havent had one since I could eat real food. In fact, I just threw out 3 cans of Protein powder that expired in my cupboard.

Until you can eat real food tho, its really your only option to get e nough Protein. I suggest you gag them down, bide your time, and stop drinking them when you can eat real food.

Good luck

Marci

I have ordered powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate splendor due to reviews, so hopefully it tastes good. I have not really had shakes since post-op diet almost four months ago. Once in awhile I will want a smoothie, and so I blend a shake with fruits. I go well over my daily recommended Protein with food though.

You should find something you can use for the day or two after fills- most surgeons require at least one full day liquids (thus my ordering Unjury).

My Dr and RD have always suggested that most Proteins come from food, and most of mine do with the exception of Breakfast as I cannot eat eggs which is a great source of Protein. Prior to my surgery I was a frappachino-holoic and found that I LOVED the believe Cappuccino (Bariatric Eating site). They are a bit pricey as well as the s&h, but they helped me get over my frapp addiction and it was a taste I got use to.

Best of luck to you.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
