30 months and my band has slipped!

Recommended Posts

He said in 5 months when I am 250 lbs I will wish I still had it...

What an absolute ass. I hope his smugness gives you extra motivation when you need it most.

Blessings,

Jonathan

OMIGOD!!!

Dr. Speigel? I cannot say that surprises me. I was actually scheduled to be banded with him, and I called and cancelled because I could not find anyone who had anything positive to say about him.

I am so sorry he didn't take better aftercare of you.

I am going to wish a Migraine headache on him...a migraine that occurs each time he fails to care...:)  :angry :devious :devious

And I DON'T feel bad about it!!!!

Sister, I am sending you all of the spare positive energy I can muster!! :)

Kelly --

We were banded the same week -- and will be unbanded the same week!! Mine slipped within a year and I had it re-positioned one year ago. It never functioned effectively for me again...after the first fill my reflux was so terrible... even with a total unfill, my misery the past nine months has been off-the chart. Slip #2 was diagnosed about 10 days ago, although it probably has been that way for awhile. No regrets that I had the surgery. Tomorrow it comes out. Tomorrow can't come soon enough. Three surgeries in 3.5 years. No more.

I'm glad you're home and healing... How's the recovery?

I'm being banded on Monday. Reading this stuff is so discouraging because it makes one think it's not "if" you slip, but "when" you slip.

Do US doctors truly have a handle on how to put in the band, or is the device just not perfected yet?

I think it's MORE perfected than when some of us were first banded, but I certainly DO NOT think it is perfect yet. As stated by all docs, there is a percentage of complications with all lapand placements. There are alot of folks on this board. Only a concentrated few post regularly. Many more are out there living without reporting because there is not that much to report. It's a very very personal decision. Can you lose the weight yourself? If you get banded and can maintain the band until you've lost half or more of your excess weight and regained your health, are you better off than if you had not been banded and continued to gain? Are you willing to go the bypass route and risk far worse up front complications or malabsorption/supplement issues for the rest of your life? Even the bypass is better now than years ago, BUT... ??

Hi,

I am new and I had a PB on my 5th day from a gelcap, what does it feel like if it slipped?. I heard that they mostly used to slip because they were not tacked down. How invasive is the surgery to fix it if needed, is it the same all over again?

Nervous in AZ!

Diane

I'm still in shock Kelly, it's gone! Ya after 5 days id be pissed off too

I remember your PM asking about your sister and a leak.

I have a small band and i feel/don't feel restriction. Ive come to just eat and feel the food go to the band through and sometimes pain...I truly believe band size has a lot to with each person now that i've experienced both sizes.

But the bigger size was harder to loose with.

I really hurt for you, I know you will be stong and you won't let the demon come back.

Best blessing to you Kelly

Hi Kelly. I just read all your posts. So sorry you had to to through all that misery. I've been having some problems but will start another post to try to get some help.

Thank you for sharing your journey. Sounds like you got it out just in time; not being able to swallow spit is definately bad.

Keep up the good spirits; you're an inspiration!

Take care,

I had a scope test done today to try figure what is wrong with my stomach. The doctor that did the test today said there is nothing wrong with my stomach, but he believes that my band has slipped. I can't get into see my band surgeon until April 4. The docto also said that my gall bladder has to come out. I am having a barium x-ray done on April 4th so hopefully I will know then if my band has slipped. Just wondering what it feels like when the band slips? I have been having problems since last July and not getting a lot of answers. Thanks for any answers you can give me from the doctors. I am getting frustrated.

You'll get more response from the board members if you start your own thread, rather than tacking onto this one, so you might want to repost the question.

As for what a slipped band feels like -- it varies. One somewhat common symptom is reflux. Some people will lose all restriction, some people won't be able to keep anything down. Sometime's there's pain, sometimes there isn't. When my band slipped the first time, I didn't really notice any pain. The second time, it hurt everytime I ate or drank anything. It's just one of those things that's pretty hard to diagnose strictly through symptoms. If you do repost your question, include some of the symptoms that you're having, and maybe we can offer up any relavant experiences we've had.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Kelly, I'm late to this thread, and I'm very sorry to hear that you had to have your band removed. It sounds as if you had no choice, given the horrible symptoms you suffered. If only your doctor were more supportive of your choice to fly solo. Your attitude is an inspiration, and I'm certain you'll be able to control your weight. Please let us know how you're doing.

All the tales of erosion and slippage from experienced, careful bandsters makes me realize that I should have an endoscopy this year. Jonathan, your post is a good reminder that slippage can take many forms.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
