Have banded three months now, and my have been told by my dr that I can have pop once in awhile. At first I didn't want to even drink any with the risk of "over doing it" now within the past two weeks I catch myself drinking a little sip here and there. How much is too much I really can't drink too much cause it is too sweet? What about alcohol? What types of drinks are ok? Not ok?

I was a diet coke addict and I kicked the habit during pre-op. I have a pretty lax doctor but one thing he was adamant about was no carbonated beverages as the carbonation overtime could stretch the pouch. I don't want to go through all of this and then have that happen...so I gave it up. I used to drink 10-12 cans a day. I don't even miss it just two weeks later. Of course you wouldn't have wanted to be around me on day 1...I was grumpy and scary. :)

Providing you are not eating at the same time, all liquids will pass quickly through your band into your stomach. So stretching your pouch is not a concern.

But you do need to drink it very slowly so as not to build up a lot of as.

I am always concerned with he thought of anything coming up from below the band.

I will have a beer or two at a ball game say, but NO food.

My surgeon doesn't have a problem with carbonation as our digestive system is not a closed system, the gas will escape. The problem is that it can be an uncomfortable process.

For me, soda is too carbonated. I'll sip it sometimes, but usually it gives me the hiccups. yuck! Beer I am generally OK with.

The thing with alcohol and non-diet soda to remember is calories. Diet soda can increase your appetite due to the chemicals in it.

I gave up Diet Coke I think because I was scared of the bubbles and attempting to get healthy. Yes artificial sweeteners etc make you fat and hungry. After I got used to my band I tried a Diet Coke (I was a former addict who just loved the taste) and it tasted awful! I can have a few sips of something carbonated but it makes me uncomfortable and burpy. I dont know if I could drink a whole one or a beer.

My doc said the same you cant stretch out a open balloon no matter what you put in it...the bubbles will escape up! You can stretch out your pouch by overeating...

Tried a diet coke zero for the first time the other day since being banded. For some reason it tasted awful to me, don't know why. Didn't have a problem with the taste before being banded.

Yeah, I'm a diet soda addict myself. I won't get banded for a few more months yet so I have time to indulge :) But my doctor doesn't have a problem with diet soda. He just said a lot of his patients stopped drinking it because of the discomfort. I'd be happy if it gave me a tummy ache. Diet soda doesn't have any nutritional value and the chemicals don't do us any favors. I am sad about the beer. I love, love, LOVE beer. Anyone can see this based on my chub since it's a high calorie drink...

I'm preparing myself to abstain from alcohol as much as possible once I am banded. Whenever I do indulge, I'll make sure the beverage is high quality and expensive since it'll be a real treat!

I am right with you on my love for fountain pop, I gave it up for awhile and then I gave in, I can actually drink a fountain pop thru a straw better then a regular 20oz bottled pop, I probably have a fountain pop one every two Days I can't give it up

I drink pop sometimes, but it depends, it can irritate a little the first couple of sips. I've always been a fan of Diet Coke and love it, but I don't drink it much anymore. I do drink alcohol frequently, and don't have a problem with it. I love my wine....lol! However, we have to remember it still has calories, so you need to adjust your daily accordingly. Also many people find they feel the effects sooner so can't drink as much anymore. Not necessarily a bad thing!

I think you can drink it once in a while but pop is acidic and when I drink it I sometimes a bloated feeling.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
