Anything You Wish You Knew Before You Had Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have my visit with my surgeon before surgery on Friday 3/9. I am getting so nervous and excited for my upcoming surgery! 32 days! This is my last opportunity to see him face to face. I have a list of questions to ask him, and I don't want to miss anything. Is there anything you wished you would have asked before surgery? Any good ideas on questions I should ask? Thanks!

Where will my port be?

Will you leave a fill in the band during surgery (many people who get a fill during surgery have more trouble with liquids in the first week and the doctor has to remove the fill in the end).

If you have not recieved a post surgery "diet" handout ask for one. It's really nice to have your instructions in black and white. You don't want to struggle to remember what you were told when you are tired and hurting post surgery.

I wish I would have known I would have regular "girly" cycles. I got pregnant soon after surgery and they didn't seem like it was a common thing. I have to see a parinatologist because I have a history of blood clots so I am a high risk pregnancy. I'm 28 weeks now and the specialist laughed when I told her about the "Lap-Band Baby". She said it is VERY easy to get pregnant after band placement, they see it all the time.

Also, I put a binder together with good foods/snacks after surgery as well as good recipes. It was helpful but am no longer dieting or had a chance to use my band due to the pregnancy.

Best of luck!

One thing I wish I would have known was that I would have an incision on my bra line. I had asked about where my port would be, since I had read a lot of people seem to have it very close to their pant or bra line. But I did not think about a regular incision being there - made it a little uncomfortable!

Can you give me nausea and pain meds prior to surgery so you don't have to wait for them fill them after surgery. Get gas x strips too. Good luck

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
